Agreed. Maybe our expectations were too high or we know too much about the situation, but people do better with less material.
quite sad i think, would have liked to see him get paid a few mil by the **** don king! Poor man makes me wanna give him a big hug.
True. But it's easy to forget who this documentary is for, the general public, casual sport and boxing fans. Not just for the hardcore boxing faithful. I have little doubt that those who know nothing or very little about this fight found it a compelling watch and I reckon it'll get rave reviews tomorrow. Be interesting to speak to people tomorrow to see if they saw it (non-boxing fans) and get their views on it.
I thought it was great. Thought provoking, well shot and aimed at the general public not just boxing fans
it was broken up too much by the breaks and I really wanted to hear more from Steward and get his take on it.
You can't accuse McClellan of quitting when it could be that the blood clot was forming in his head at that point. The blinking could also be something to do with serious brain injury at that point during the fight. It may well be that McClellan might have still fell into a coma with a blood clot had the fight been stopped earlier, eg; 6th round. His head wasn't right, as he even told his trainer that it felt as if water was being poured into his head when it was being put over the top of his head, after the fight in the corner.
it said on talksport yesterday that there is an extended version of this documentary on itv 4 but im not sure when. i thought it shows how much we take boxing for granted , everytime a fighter enters the ring , he takes his life in his own hands.
Yep, my bad. As someone mentioned above, I thought it showed a little bias towards Benn by not addressing the rabbit punches which he was throwing all night. It would have given something for the ref to answer for as well because he warned Benn a shed load of times but never took action. Manny Steward came across as very bitter as well, you'd think with the success he's had with other fighters, and given McClellan's condition that he wouldn't hold any resentment towards Gerald, but he clearly does. As for Stan Johnson, the guy is pond life, it's that simple.
That Benn-Mclellan fundraiser was in 2007. I remember ITV broadcasting it before one of the fights after it happened. There was very little new footage. I thought it was a pretty poor documentary - very badly structured and never looking at the issues in-depth. So a standard ITV documentary then. They really needed to cover Benn and Mclellan's careers to that date. There was a lot of assumed knowledge. They also needed to do more to explain what happened to Mclellan in the ring and why. It would have been interesting to spend more time looking at the aftermath, rather than hanging on the old "boxing saves lives" cliche.
I don't think it will - it was too light touch to really mean anything. If you didn't know the story that was outright confusing. The Roy Jones comment means nothing unless you know who he was (and certainly if you've seen him recently!). Who Manny Steward was, what was so devastating about G-man's injuries, what happened to Benn after, what led to the fight, etc... It was a complete mess of a show.
yip I agree with this, I found myself explaining to my missus during every break what this meant and what happened in certain areas.
