Good ol' Beaky, thought he'd get them into trouble for this. From the Telegraph: ------------------------------------------------------------------ Jim Rosenthal's 'spear-chucker' gaffe forces ITV apology to 'good friend' Tessa Sanderson An ITV spokesman has been forced to issue an apology on behalf of Jim Rosenthal after the presenter referred to black athlete Tessa Sanderson as a "spear chucker" live on air. By Richard Bright Last Updated: 12:43PM GMT 10 Nov 2008 Throwaway remark: Jim Rosenthal has apologised for his poor choice of words Photo: GETTY IMAGES Rosenthal, 60, was hosting Danny Williams' boxing match on Friday night when he used the term after a link from a short film about charity work by 1984 Olympic gold medallist Sanderson, 52, to help troubled inner city youths. When the camera returned to Rosenthal, he said: Tessa Sanderson there, she was a great spear chucker. Rosenthal's comment prompted a flurry of complaints from ITV viewers, one of whom wrote: The term is highly racist to black people. The only more offensive thing he could have said was what we shall leave as the N word. A spokesman for ITV4 said: Jim was referring to Tessas achievements as a javelin thrower and there was absolutely no intention to offend on his part. However, in hindsight, Jim accepts that it was a poor choice of phrase and will be apologising to Tessa, who is a good friend of his. The controversy is not without precedent in this country. Maori New Zealander John Witanga won £11,000 in a race discrimination case in 2003 after being called a spear chucker by boss Colin Lusted in his first week at catering firm Rail Gourmet, of Edinburgh. ------------------------------------------------------------------
I know it was bad but I think it was a slip of the tongue and no harm was meant by it and I doubt he meant to say anything racist.
I don't think it was a racist statement at all. Javelin throwers are often termed as 'spear chuckers' - the fact that Tessa Sanderson is black ought to be irrelevant. If people didn't keep mentioning black and white the issue would fade. Stupid things like...... The Black Police Association 'Lewis Hamilton the first black man to win the F1 championship' 'Barack Obama the first black president' The fact that Hamilton is black isn't important at all, but people tread on eggshells around racist issues instead of just acting normally. Half the time, the alleged victim of racist abuse doesn't really care - it is the person who is alleged to have said racist remarks that ends up in bother. Often for no apparent reason.
This is absolutely ridiculous. The term is used as a slang term for a javelin thrower, it has nothing to do with race. What sort of far left PC society has the UK become? This just shows that people are looking to be offended, or more saliently that certain people are looking to find things that prove an agenda and prove offence when there is no agenda and no offence meant.
Suits ITV4's Partridgesque production that Rosenthal should accidentally use a racist term. For the Froch fight they should have a short film about Dale Winton's charity work raising money for under priviledged youths by working on the cadbury's production line boxing up these.. This content is protected ...then cut back to Rosenthal for his comment on the film.
Agree, most the time its do gooders (mainly white housewives who have nothing better to do) who bring it up, if everyone would stop seeing colour as so important and just saw people then things would be better
To be honest, if I called a black person a spear chucker I would apologize also. Ok, it was a slip of the tounge, he forgot to engage his brain, it wasn't malicious.. and that is obvious to everyone including Tessa Sanderson I'm sure, but it is still polite and correct to apologize, why some of you seem to be outraged by this fact I don't know.
I bet that not one of the people who rang/wrote was black...... p.s. I'm black an just thought it was extremely funny
Right, because ignoring issues makes them go away. The Black Police Association is there to monitor important issues, like are black people being treated fairly in the police force I'm assuming, why is this a bad thing? Racism and discrimination exsist, if you don't do something about it, then it continues to exist and grow surely? The Barack Obama thing, Jesus, in a country where black people were brutalized and marginalized for centuries, don't you think the first black president is a signifcant event in history? some kind of redemption? a turning point even, a symbol that things are changing and your future isn't infalibly linked to your ethnicty, like it has been, for a lot of people, for many years...
It's not "racist" it is a racist term though, it wasn't a malicious thing to say, just a silly thing, and he apologiszed, no harm done, end of story IMO.
:yep I was watching it with my girlfriend who is black and she didn't even notice anything he had said was a bit dodgy, went right over her head, bless
