:deal Def agree to that....the more media play somethin like this gets, the more stupid the whole idea of racism becomes.
We all know it was just a daft gaffe which was funny at tha time, but lord knows how anyone can pull him up on it when it was just a slip up!?
I like good ol Jim, and in my book he is still one of the best out there....keep up the good work lad :good

funny and clearly not intentionally racist - although it is a racist term. didn't the duke of edinburgh say something similiar to some aboriginals and it was taken out of context by loads of newspapers?

i think he was shown a demonstration of traditional spear throwing and then later on he met another group and asked them if they also "still chucked spears"

there probably weren't many complaints to itv about this but its not difficult to understand why they might want to pre-emptively apologise for any offense caused.

I agree. Nobody EVER calls Javelin 'Spear Chucking' and 'Spear Chucker' is solely a racist term.

I don't doubt he said it innocently but still, let's not pretend this is a pc gone mad issue. It absolutely isn't. He used a derogatory term unwittingly.

Disagree with the last line though, watching your language etc only reinforces the divisions. People should relax about these things a little bit.

My question is this: in what context would he have heard the phrase "spear chucker" in the first place? Is it used in a non-offensive context? If so, in what context? If not, he must have known it was offensive, right?:think

He probably did. But does he care? Obviously not.

He just doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that would even say anything mildly controversial, nevermind something racist! He's too risk-averse for any of that.

Very good point... I wonder how many band wagon jumpers have now complained? I seem to recall that the Brand / Ross fiasco initially resulted in a few complaints but once the story gathered speed the complaints were pouring in. I personally blame the tabloids who spun the story superbly well; plus I wouldn't be surprised if No.10 were happy to let it run and run... kept the state of the economoy, soldiers deaths and the price of gas and electricity off the front page!

I seriously don't believe this was a racist comment and agree with most of what's been said in this thread. Political correctness gone mad; or just another excuse to bring down a known TV figure? Time will tell. Shite of Jim R gets the can for this one.

Bollocks! I've heard Spear Chucker said on numerous occasions because that's where the sport came from essentially. Its just playing with words, like saying 'he's a fantastic pugalist for example. Those that made the racist connection are those that discriminate between race still in 2008. Nothing racist about it. He should take back his apology because it sets a worrying precident when people have to apologise for innocent sentences .

i have to agree with most views in this thread, the media have alot to blame for (in a way) promoting discrimination, we all know it happens and its bad, but we dont need 3 million complaints to highlight it, its the same with knife crime......ffs....... the stabbings i've heard about in the last 2 years on mainstream t.v and newspapers has multiplied 20 fold, the media are telling youngsters the streets are getting worse so pack a blade or two, its terrible.

and another thing, i seem to remember a while back, a report in the papers, that they were discussing a ban on piggy banks, because they offended muslims, whatever next.

who asked for the ban? media sterotyped muslims or an oxfordshire beuracratic office holder looking to pass a quota on racism in the area?
