Is he a ATG, even relative to the somewhat historically shallow divisions he's fought in? Does his weight jump in the last few years impress you? How does he do H2H? I've rarely if ever seen his name thrown around on this forum so I figured I'd try for some fresh discussion.
nah, good solid fighter with a fairly shallow resume. His out of ring problems have held him back too. He hasnt been a very active fighter, and hes already up there in age for a small guy.
Well, in weak divisions its easier to be "great" relative to the other fighters in that divisions history. Hatton being in some peoples top ten for 140 is a good example.
Well Hattons not in my top ten. I think to be great you have to prove it in some capacity. I dont think Calderon has done that. Just using Hatton as an example, has Calderon even beaten a fighter on the level of a somewhat faded Tszyu?
Is Calderon more like a Ricardo Lopez? I don't mean style, more like placement in history (so far...). I'm trying to figure this guy out. I've been trying to follow him and see how he functions in his weight class.
When a guy has a relatively weak division that he fights in, I think you can fairly assess him on consistent excellence. I'm not a fan of Calderon but he has gotten the job done over and over and over again. If you mean ATG by some concept of being on a short list like top 50-absolutely not. Top 100? It wouldn't be insane, I guess. Top couple hundred? Oh, sure. But on the other side, it's perfectly sane to me because of that competition to just not rate him either. These guys are tricky. He's been a linear champion but never unified. He's been on top without interruption since 2003. ...I don't know.
Agree, but I still think Lopez has had better competition overall, and a lot of people have trouble ranking Lopez for the very same reasons.
