Unbeaten, slick boxer, who had made a good number of defences of the Minimumweight title, before moving up to Light Flyweight and dethroning the divisional no.1 Hugo Cazares. Should this not be enough to get him into the P4P top ten? In the majority of magazines and websites he is not included in the argument. Is it the lack of power (no attractive KO record), or the fact that he didn't unify down at Minimumweight with the likes of Eagle, Niida and Rahman? I think that being the no.1 in one division, then moving up and immediately defeating the no.1 in the division above should be enough to put him in at the bottom half of the top 10 P4P. What do the rest of you think? Were would you place him?
Who has he beaten? Its bad enough the talent pool at his weight class are painfully small (due to not many men boxing being around that size, even in mexico & asian countries) but he hasnt even beaten the best around his weight class.
Im a big fan of Calderon, but i think he just misses out on top 10 p4p. He past his best and has struggled in 3 of his last 4 fights against B level fighters. He's had a great career but should be looking towards retirement because if he continues he's going to get beat by a good pressure fighter (Albeit above his best weight). 33 is ancient for a man of his size and i honestly think he'll lose to Cazares in the rematch or to Ulises Solis. He should consider makeing a move back down to 105 where he can beat all the champions and is fighting men around the same size as himself. Ivan was certainly deserving of top 10 P4P a few years ago when he dominated all his opponents and rarely lost a round. However he still ranks highly P4P now due to his past accomplishments and him fighting bigger men, but the weaknesses hes shown lately cause him to drop a bit.
some people have him at the edge of the top 10 but personally i think he somewhere within the 15 range..i would rank guzman higher than him
Top 15. The talent pool down there is slim and as highlighted by Jaco, he's struggled with some B levels lately. A guy like Mijares has recently dominated better opposition than is available down there below 112. Lack of KO power is irrelevant, it's who he's fought and how much he's declined. People like to latch on to what they percieve as underrated talents, but in this case, they are overrating the guy if they think he's really a top 10 cemented, it's not fair to fighters who have beaten better fighters than he has recently much more impressively and there are quite a few. But a top 15 he deserves, that's cemented.
He has declined; but he should be given a chance, I feel, to aclimatise to the new weight. I'll be watching closely next time he's on.
He looked amazing in his last fight. Won every round on all 3 judges scorecards. He is going to rematch Cazares, And I think he is going to wip him. If he does...What then?
He already beat Cazares and Cazares again is not the best in that division, he's a B level fighter, a more dominant win over a guy he already beat cleanly by way of rounds is not going to up his ranking.
IMO he shouldn't rematch Cazares, he already beat him convincingly, But word on the street is that he is going to rematch him. Calderon really doesn't have any options and I think he should be put top 10 lb 4 lb just off his pure skills and longevity down there.
