Ivan ''Iron Boy'' Calderon returns, to the ring and the strawweight division.

Thank christ.

Calderon's been the best fighter among the lighter divisions since Ricardo Lopez hung up his gloves, he's passed that torch on now after his two Giovani Segura defeats, with the likes of Segura himself, Pongsaklek Wonjongkam and the champions at super-flyweight now flying the flag.

In recent years though, as is to be expected of a strawweight/light-flyweight in his mid-30's, he has been slipping. Unconvincing performances against the likes of Jesus Iribe left me fearing the worst upon the Segura fight, and now still have me unconvinced of Segura's credentials.

Anyways, he's done what would have been my second choice for him(first being retirement) and stepped back down to strawweight. Barring Roman Gonzalez, he would've been competitve with most at 108lbs, but with his legs just about gone, the step down in weight is probably for the best.

His scheduled return is set for somewhere between 24-29 of October and likely opponent is the WBO champ Raul Garcia, more than likely the best at the weight right now. How do you's see this going if it comes off? Does he have enough left to have another decent run at 105, or has he reached the very end?

 

I knew he'd be coming back, he said as much almost straight away. I can't say I'm in favour of it but what can you do......

Glad he's moving back down though. There ain't many fighters that you can say were too small for light-flyweight, yet he still managed to look excellent against good opposition on a regular basis, one of the best pure boxers in the sport in recent years, such a fluid fighter, one of my favourite ever. The Cazares fights were when he began to slip IMO, hopefully he calls it a day after(hopefully) beating Garcia, so he can go out on a great win.
