ive been training for a year and have been recently asked if i'd like to start sparring soon, which i want to do. ive learnt the basics and im fit but im not quite happy with my footwork/movement and defence and i want to be if i am to spar. we did some drills the other week and i just couldnt decide when being attacked to either block, bob and weave, or just get out the way and i ended up just being static and getting whacked, its happened a few times now which is annoying.:-( so can anybody give me some tips or youtube clips/fights fighters to watch that are good examples of footwork and defence please.:think

Firstly pick a main defensive technique, whether it be block and parry or slip bob and weave or using full guard and take shots on gloves. That will help you bigtime. Because your not only guy who does that pro's often get caught not knowing what defensive technique to use. Try to step off at a angle, never straight back in a line. Try work on pivoting that will help you. Depends on what you feel comfortable doing, Bob and Weaving is for more dynamic and usually smaller fighters. Go with what you feel suits and what works the most. I personally slip, block and parry.

There quite a lot of good videos on this Youtube channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/myboxingcoach From my personal experience when you first start out dont try anything to fancy or your just get confused. Start by keeping a high guard and taking shots against your gloves. After time you will develop your own style and be able to incorporate more movement, bobing and weaving etc.
