I've come to the conclusion that Roberto Duran would knock out Monzon

Before you get too hot under the collar, Chris obviously did not start this thread with the intent that it be taken seriously.. He was trying to make a point, and in so doing, used a sarcastic and comical approach... Chris has been posting here for many years, and is one of the forum's more objective and non-biased posters... You can't take everything for face value around here.

Duran had a dominating reign not unlike Carlos Monzon's at lightweight. Then he moved up while Monzon never dared to try.

No, its disagreement. Yes its the same old crew...and that same old crew pop up in reply to posts that regularly pop up, praising the 2nd coming that is Duran, claiming he'd beat this welterweight great, beat this middleweight great, this great does not belong in the same sentence as Duran, this loss doesnt count, Duran beats everybody from LW - MW H2H. Every single thread some ******* brings Duran up whether it concerns him or not. Are we not allowed to question him? Our constant replies to the innumerable amount of praise is old and tiresome..do you see the irony? You talk about us bringing up the excuses Duran fans make, whilst every single post in this thread by you lot is 50% justifying said losses?

I will say that Duran often fought dudes his own size or bigger. Monzon 90% of the time always had the upper hand in size and strength over his opponents of notability. Duran did move up in weight a whole lot over the years, while Monzon strained to keep down at 160 pounds forever and a day..... Duran had bigger balls than that of Monzon.......

I'd say that a lot of this is simply exaggeration and nothing else.

It's hand-wringing. And many posts like this one read like whining.

Duran's glorifiers can be easily contradicted without going to ignorant extremes. Anyone who ranks Duran as the #1 fighter who ever lived deserves to have "I flunked boxing history" tattooed to their forehead. But open your eyes --Duran's detractors are just as ridiculous and getting more so lately with some new posters who, quite frankly, don't know much about Duran or boxing either.

Take a look at the threads. This Duran controversy has deteriorated into schoolyard nonsense. At best the points being made are so worn out, I feel old just reading them. At worst, they suggest a personal vendetta. I'm wondering if some of these posters lost their house betting on Duran in the Leonard rematch. Perhaps some guy with a black beard stole their wives. I don't know, but it's getting weird.

Its getting weird, because more posters are questioning Duran? Every single other fighter has his detractors and the arguments for and against every single other fighter are the same old and are argued tirelessly. But now Duran has a few detractors its weird? Its weird because he has detractors at all, on ESB Classic...OH NO!

Theres alot of it recently because where there is smoke, there is fire, and there has ALWAYS been fire concerning Duran(a forest scorching everlasting blaze sweeping through the board). But its weird, you're not used to seeing this smoke, because its always been blown away by elitists. Duran's fire does not follow logical sense, its so weird that there is smoke.

I think some people are taking this thread too seriously. I thought it was pretty clear it was mostly humor, but making a small point that I have noticed as well. And nowhere was he actually putting down Duran--moreso the things people say.

Duran DOES seem to get a free pass for things. For example, things that directly compare to stuff that Tyson, in particular, gets trashed over (partied too much, was unmotivated, didn't have the right corner anymore). For some reason it was OK for Duran to do those things, but the second you say Tyson deteriorated after getting rid of Rooney, you are a nuthugger making excuses for him.

I agree about Duran and Benitez, I cant believe how far apart some people have them on ATG lists, I'm not saying Duran should be lower but Benitez higher, he was better than he gets credit for sometimes.

He's had detractors (and plenty of them) in the five or six years i've been reading these boards.Same as any of the other all-time greats who have strong fanbases.

It's the right of every fan to delude themselves though i suppose.

It's a funny thread that i dont think was intended to be serious. I have Duran at 5 and I dont think he needs bull**** excuses to justify that ranking; the guy got sparked by Thomas Hearns... at the end of the day who gives a ****. He accomplished more than enough by the time he beat Leonard to be ranked in the Top 10.

The wins over Cuevas, Moore and Barkley are just icing on the cake.

He was ****ing 29 when he beat Leonard, in what should have been the twilight of his career, but the focus of the sayers of nay on this thread seems to regard his post 30 work. This does show an alarming amount of ignorance.
