Wladimir Klitschko is a very interesting heavyweight combining physical strength and technique for these times. I prohibited myself from contributing in threads such as this one but since Ali is such an icon and the thread starter is clearly suggesting that Klitschko is greater than Ali, let just put things how they really are - Emmanuel Steward put himself on the line for Wladimir when the Ukrainian went into panick against Brewster in LV and was put on the seat of his trunks by Williamson's counter shot still in 2004. Manny helped the power puncher to loosen up a bit against Peter and that's why he won that decision or he would still be a stiff, immobile, mechanical and long power puncher under Fritz Snudek in Germany... Now, I am not saying that he is not a fluid boxer-puncher now but even at this moment, nobody is 100% sure that he will catch a sneaky, mobile and intelligent Ibragimov...So how come he would beat a guy who played around with Sonny Liston's jab and let George Foreman punch himself out? And I dare to say that Ali would beat him to the punch each and every time and that Wladimir wouldn't be able to take the sort of shots George Chuvalo took. Vitaly just did the same that Liston did ( said to Joe Louis he quitted due to his left shoulder) against Byrd. No disrespect to the Klitschko fans.

No, what's silly is mistaking statistics for facts. The numbers don't tell even a fraction of the whole story.

Using the numbers alone you could say:
- Vargas is 30. Calzaghe is 35. Therefore Vargas is closer to his prime than Calzaghe.
- Tye Fields is 6' 9". Tyson is 5' 11". Therefore Tye fields is more feared than prime Tyson.

Firstly, most Vitali fans say he was past his prime by the time he fought Lennox. They claim his prime was the Hide fight (a short prime! :yep ).
And if you don't agree, then Lennox was the heaviest, oldest (obviously) & slowest he had ever been and still mashed Vitali's face.

Besides, "A beat B, B beat C, therefore A would beat C" doesn't work in the real world.
And on top of that, your "A" (Vitali) LOST to your "B" (Lennox), and you're only assuming your "B" would beat "C" (Ali). :yep

An advantage in speed and skill most definitely CAN make up for a 40 lbs difference in weight and a 3 inch difference in height.

Watch... Corey Sanders vs TOS Williamson (102 lb weight difference) or Mike Grant vs Guinn (40 lb weight difference, 4" height difference, 8" reach difference)... then get back to me.

Now, imagine a younger, faster Ali in the ring with that version of Klitschko, and the consider that prime Ali took 14 of 15 rounds against a much tallker Ernie Terrell. Ali bounces right hands off the skull of Vitali all night, and, even if he does take something in return, his ability to absorb punishment was as good as any heavyweight in history.

Easy UD...or possible cut-eye stoppage for Ali.

 

In that case any heavy equally as good at absorbing punishment should seriously think about getting out of the sport.

His style is perhaps more efficient (boring?) now, but he was in his physical prime against Sanders and especially Brewster. And with the amateur career and 40-45 pro fights under his belt he had an awesome mix of youth and experience.

 

Knocking out Vitali? The guy who took some sickening shots from Lennox Lewis and Corrie Sanders and kept coming? Vitali was never knocked down in his boxing career, amateurs and pros. A lot of lesser fighters made it through 15 rounds with Ali.

I believe Ali is well equipped to beat Vitali with a defensive style, pecking away. Vitali feasted on aggressive fighters who took the fight to him, no matter how fast they were. The two fighters he had trouble to hit flush were Hoffmann and Byrd and both were very defensive against him.

Wlad - Ali to me is wide open. When Wlad is mentioned, someone always has to bring up his losses. I agree that if he gasses as he did against Purrity and Brewster, he will lose against Ali and any decent fighter as well. But if Ali struggles like he did against the 188 pound Jones, Wlad likewise would eat him up. If he gets cocky like he did against Henry Cooper, he goes to sleep against Wlad. Both on their best days would be a very interesting fight.
