He wouldn't miss it by much tho. Tyson can only be put so low. Without even ordering them there's no way you can give me 20 names ahead of him, it would get downright embarrassing.

Fair enough, each to their own I suppose. If anything the highly impressive manner of his first title reign (Thomas, Berbick, Holmes and Spinks: all good wins) should qualify him for the bottom reaches of the Top 10- in my view (despite the mixed bag of what followed). Any lower than 15 is definitely unreasonable.

    I've him at #8.

I dont know about that. There are the old-timers that I'm not familiar with - and nor are you, by your own admission, right ?
But they have to be considered in a true "ALL TIME" list.
And if you dont know that much about them it would be foolish to say their inclusion an "embarrassment" to the person who puts them forward.

Tyson's incredible dominance from '86 to (not including:yep ) '90 is probably the most dominant period of a fighter in heavyweight history since gloved boxing. Only Marciano comes close. Tyson beat something like 12 ranked contenders and only lost to one of them during the period 86-92. For that alone he should be in the top15 at least, i have him at the bottom of the top10 near Holyfield.

I'd consider putting Buster Douglas above Mike Tyson on my list.

I thought it would have been already cut and dried.

    ;)

Yeah, you're right. He pretty much proved superiority with that brutal beat down and KO.
Tyson did better against common opponents though, so maybe not as cut and dried as you think ........

Neither of them would make my list though, so I wont need to worry about it.

Who you putting at #6 on yours then, JT ?

I think that Mike Tyson holds firm at 10. I really can't see any justifiable reason to rate him higher or lower. He did beat everybody that was anybody in the 80's. I do, however, feel that the other people I mentioned can be shifted around. I chose Foreman over Holyfield when I typed this a couple years ago. Now, I'd possibly be persuaded to have him above Foreman because he won more fights while being champion.

Good point Rocco.......... "Anyway, back to why we agree for once... I think Tyson was a great boxer, with tremendous skill and power, that never seen it's full potential. What he did outside of the ring, before he ever accomplished what he should have, is where we differ. I really wish the guy would have just done what everybody knew he could... without all the other crap that crept in!"

I think Tyson accomplished more than you give him credit for though. I rank him +/- 9-11 ATG heavy. He should have been a top 5 but burned out like a meteor

Finalising right now Sonny and am going along the lines of looking for reasons why each name DID NOT deserve to be number 6 to try clarify such a tight grouping.

This post has convinced me Tyson MUST be above Liston regardless of the others. What Liston could have and should have been doing Tyson actually did do for 3 years. His list of ranked victims is better than Sonny's and he mostly cleaned out the division in record time. Both went off the rails bad for various reasons, so Tysons tenure at the top pips him ahead.

For whatever reasons (i won't be debating) Frazier lost 4 of his 5 fights to great opponents and Tyson lost 3 of 3. Tyson mopped the division in better fashion. Head to head peak they aren't that far apart. Tyson kept fighting where as Frazier got out before he **** on the tail of his resume. Dinner also brought forth some good points per Frazier last night and i also accept Tyson as an absolutely peak fighter burnt out early due to numerous mental problems. Some will say if Ali had not been exiled Frazier would certainly not have had a tenure as champ as long, if at all.

Tyson pips Frazier by a hair.

Tyson will be marginally ahead of Frazier.
