The safety is a tricky question, boxing came pretty close IMHO to getting banned in the 1990s after a string of deaths/ brain injuries. They brought in early weigh-ins to help boxers re-hydrateand, while most purists don;t like them, they seem to be doing to job and keeping the BMA and the "ban boxing" mob off our back.
