Depends which way you look at it I'm not sure about the weigh-ins, I think no matter when you held them there would be those that would try and manipulate (if that's the right word) to gain an advantage. In terms of during the fights, the referees are generally much more safety oriented than previously, as are the cornermen - if someone is taking too much the fight is stopped..... as for medical personnel, you can't do much better than having doctors and paramedics at ringside and an ambulance in attendance. Was it Kevin McIntyre's fight that was called off mid-fight because someone on the undercard had grief in the change room and needed attention? Think it was :think
I'd have brought it up sooner but I was still reeling from that "Knockout Rule". We'd still have Kelly Pavlik as middleweight champ because he was stubborn enough to be able to absorb enough punishment from Sergio Martinez FFS.
Rudkin was my grandads favourite fighter and this match-up was the fight that actually got me into boxing aged 7...it should be compulsory viewing for people wanting to get into the sport.
Its not really about "manipulation". When the weigh-ins were on the same day a lot of the injuries were thought to be due to the boxers brains not having chance to re-hydrate. Since they've moved the weigh-ins back there are def, less deaths and major brain injuries in boxing. No one is going to move the weigh-ins forward again a risk being known as the man who was responsible for the number of ring deaths increasing again.

Talking about 15 rounds being brought back and same day weigh ins brings are way too dangerous to be thinking about imo, I get frustrated with ridiculous decisions and gross mis-matches we all do but the health of fighters is paramount we dont want to be on here starting threads about more fighters with ring-related damages or deaths. Ours is the only big sport without an international governing body, its mental. We need a commitee of ex pro's, trainers even journos etc without agenda to oversee the sport and the major decisions. It doesnt need to take the place of the governing bodies it needs to regulate them. Making sure the fight cards are value for money and vetoing mismatches particularly in title fights. Judges should be assigned by the IGB and personally i would ban catch-weight fights they serve no purpose if youn cant make the assigned weight dont fight. Any fighter who doesnt make weight should forfeit the fight getting rid of any of that PBF-JMM stlye nonsense. Same with corrales castillo 2 with corrales doing the macho thing but being grossly the smaller fighter and paid the price. In the propsed 3rd fight he did the right thing and said no to the fight, these choices should not be in the fighters hands as they have thier own agenda at heart. An IGB could handle this. Whilst the KO the champ thing is certainly innovative and i buy the attrition will play a part thing too it wouldnt be a good idea. You'll get feather fisted fighters, knowing they'll have to have a high work-rate as they cant KO the champ with 1 shot. This will lead to people working at tempos they're not capable of managing and their body will suffer ie dehydrate. Also it will set a tendancy for fighters to psychologically punch harder which again puts safety at risk. The issues need tweaking not overhauling. A judge whos scored 100 title fights doesnt make him a good judge. They need performance regulations and be rewarded with bigger fights when working well or demoted if you like to lower levels when you score like Tillerman. Dont give boxing haters the opportunity to stick a nail in the sport we love for the sake of idiot uneducated judges. Fix the problem dont bring up old ones or start new ones
I've been saying for ages that the elimination of the championship rounds was one of worst things to happen and we should go back to 15 rounds but for only and above 160. If we went back to This content is protected but only This content is protected fights this would give less relevence to the alphabet soup straps and the casuals would know its a proper title fight with meaning. It would be done for fights that everyone recognised was a true championship fight and someone like the ring magazine could sanction it, which would in turn give Ring mag more mainstream attention and recognision. The reason I say only 160+ is that we need to show it's designed for fighters that can settle the action. If we tried to make it for all classes like the 1980's, people will bring up Boom Boom Mancini and Korean Kim showing lightweights have absolutely no business fighting for 45 mins because their economy of power/attrition can last too long in a prolonged but brain damaging beating, generally speaking. 15 rounds would sort the men from the boys, encourage fighters especially heavyweights to get in shape, give smarter fighters with better strategy and tacticians more of a chance, make those big championship fights more compelling and a story within the fight (sometimes the 12 rounds it ends just when things are starting to get interesting) and it also would give television networks more ad time and revenue (those that show ads inbetween rounds and have recently been pulling the plug on boxing for that reason.
