It's almost homosexual. Can't get enough of Jose Napoles, even though I've been watching him for years. I think the only other fighter to grab me like this was Marvin Hagler back in the day (as a young'un). If there was more footage of a peak Ike Williams then... But there isn't. I only made a thread on Mantequilla the other day. Can't help it. Everything the man lands on his opponent, I have to rewind it to study the feet, the timing. The way he throws a shot, it's stylish. A jab is not just a jab. I have to remark that Napoles is one of the best combination punchers of all time. This is without doubt. Of course, in the '70s he was regarded as the best fighter in the world, pound-for-pound, which is saying something as the decade was stacked with all-time greats and long time champions. What about rating Napoles on an all time pound-for-pound list? I always put him around #25. I reckon a case could be made for #15 in all honesty. A few reasons: - Long time champion with thirteen lineal title defences over very good opposition - Was a known terror before becoming champion, feasted on many contenders while being avoided by titlists - Travelled abroad to defend his title several times (a big thing in my book, takes bollocks) And the thing that improves Napoles' standing even more is the fact that in rematches he ****ed the bloke over even more than he did the last time. The Backus rematch was great vengeance, but I think even more important than that was avenging the Muniz farce. As a fighter right near the end, to beat the talented Muniz was some feat. I have to go now, these were some quick thoughts. Anyone with me?
He's the ultimate example of a silky smooth boxer-puncher, a technical maestro. What really separated him were his intangibles; his will and his toughness (mental and physical). Aside from the soft skin he was more or less the perfect fighter. I'd rank him top 30, but I've never really known how to separate the 3 Cuban masters Napoles, Gavilan, and Rodriguez.
From the moment I first heard of him..when my dad bought me a copy of the Ring magazine issue that had Napoles with a badly beaten Curtis Cokes...I've thought that he was easily one of the greatest, classiest fighters ever...in any weight. Pure Mantequilla!

Cokes's jab was impressive but Napoles did not seem to have any respect for it or Cokes's vaunted counter-punching. Napoles exploded on him with combinations whenever he liked to show who truly had the fight in control. You could argue that neither fighter was as motivated as they were for their initial encounter but Napoles showed his consistency in breaking Cokes down again. Napoles did some cutting of his own in this match and had Cokes bleeding all over the place at the end. Cokes said Napoles was better than he ever was in a post-fight interview.

Pretty sure he was being sarcastic. Fuji was incredibly wild. Very powerful, though. Would've been a menace to fight. Made to order for Locche, though.
The man was a massive puncher no doubt. I have quite a few of his fights and they always make for great entertainment. He was more like a street fighter than a boxer. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPPujvw2sdk[/ame] 7:20 [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZDVIr7ponI[/ame] 7:10
:thumbsupThank you TGA for Napoles-Cokes II!! I've always wanted to see it..though I know it's a virtual match for their 1st fight.
