Poor overall list of opponents, but a damn tough ******. Overall he'd do well in all eras.

    He fought who was available.

Any resume can be picked apart. Ali was lucky to walk away with wins vs. Doug Jones, Henry Cooper (1st fight), Jimmy Young, Ernie Shavers, and Ken Norton (3rd fight)... but he did. I'm not saying they were all robberies, but he had a very tough time with all of these men. He went 22-3 in HW World title fights but some of those wins were against some serious bums. Let's take a look-

Sonny Liston x2- Ali had an easy time vs. Liston but many of the Liston fans argue that Liston was older than what was listed and he was past prime by the time he fought Ali. Let's not even get into the rematch right now.

Floyd Patterson x2- Patterson was a LHW who was down more than any other HW Champ (20 times)... but Ali didn't even put him down.

George Chuvalo- Small HW and human punching bag. He was 34-11-2

Brian London- Fvcking Joke! He was 35-13

Karl Mildenberger- Small HW with little power, had already been stopped by two B level fighters.

Cleveland Williams- One of the most overrated contenders ever. He stopped Ernie Terrell but lost a decision to an improved Terrell in their rematch. He drew with Eddie Machen. He was stopped by Bob Satterfield and Liston x2 prior to facing Ali.

Ernie Terrell- Tall and thin fighter without a big punch who liked to hold. He won decisions over small HWs Zora Folley, Eddie Machen, and Doug Jones. He also stopped LHW Bob Foster.

Zora Folley- Good HW pretty much on par with Eddie Machen. He wasn't big, he wasn't a big puncher, he wasn't the most durable, and he wasn't super fast.

Jerry Quarry x2- Small HW, not a huge puncher, entered the ring bleeding, very few wins vs. top HWs.

Oscar Bonavena- Smallish HW with good power and durability but not the most skilled HW of the day.

Joe Frazier- 1st fight- Frazier dropped Ali and beat him by decision. Short in height, with a short reach, and not very heavy. Not a quick guy but an excellent left hook.

He lost to Norton the 1st time and should have the 3rd time. He defended against bums like Wepner, Coopman, Dunn, and Evangelista.

Ali is #1 on most list, including mine... even his resume can be picked apart!

No he didnt .After winning the WB0 title he defended it against two unranked men Mahone and Sullivan
    .
    Ranked fighters included:
    Lewis,Tyson,Johnson,Holyfield,Tua,Wlad,Maskaev,Grant,Rahman,Byrd

He then defended against no10 ranked Byrd and lost. Next was unranked Timo Hoffman. Ranked men included:
    Lewis,Tyson,Johnson,Holyfield,Tua,Wlad,Maskaev,Grant,Rahman.
After beating the fat Kirk Johnson for the vacant WBC crown ,he fought ancient Gomez who was no 9 ,bypassing Wlad,Chagaev,Povetkin,Valuev,Ibragimov,Peter,Maskaev, who were aLl ranked above him.
He then defended against no6 Arreola.
    Next was unranked Kevin Johnson.
    Those ranked included:
    Povetkin,Chambers,Chagaev,Haye,Arreola,Boytsov,Valuev,Dimitrenko.

Next fight was against the unranked Sosnowski.
Followed by the ancient unranked Briggs ,this is 2010.
    Rated then were
    Haye,Povetkin,Adamek,Chagaev,Chambers,Boytsov,Valuev,Dimitrenko.Arreola.

    Now its Solis 2011.Unranked.
    Ranked were
    Povetkin,Adamek,Chambers,Dimitrenklo,Helenius,Boytsov,Chagaev,Arreola,Pulev.

Adamek was next , he was ranked. As were Peter and Sanders

    Chisora was next, Unranked.

    Charr. Unranked

Are we to believe all these ranked contenders refused to challenge Vitali in those years?

Your arguments concerning Ali are erroneous, and miss the point completely
Liston was the defending champion and the number one contender when Ali fought him.
Patterson was the number 2 contender ,and had been for 3 years, prior to which he had been the champion.

Floyd scaled 196.75lbs for that fight and had not been inside the LHVy limit for 10years!
Calling him a lightheavy is ridiculous.
Chuvalo was a second choice opponent when Terrell , the number one contender dropped out.

Small? He was 1.5lbs heavier than Ali!
London was a poor challenger but ranked no 10 .
Mildenberger was ranked no 5, had been ranked for the previous 2 years and would be ranked for the next 3 after his challenge.
    Williams was unranked.
Terrell was the number one contender., had been for 2 years and had been in the top 3 for 4 years.
Folley was ranked no 2 and had been ranked for the last 7 years! Your appraisal of these men and the others you mentioned is immaterial and irrelevant to the thread ,its about whether they were ranked fighters.

Ali ducked nobody. Missing from Vitali's resume are:
    Tyson
    Boytsov
    Dimitrenko
    Tua
    Jefferson
    Haye
    Ruiz
    Brewster
    Oquendo
    Golota
    Grant
    Holyfield
    Valuev
    McCline
    Chambers
    Barrett

All ranked during his time. That's a pretty long list.

the fact that you asking the question is all that needs to be known.

fact remains then, that shytest ever lewis easily tore apart prime vitali before halftime had been reached.

Just because a guy is ranked doesn't mean he deserves to be. Dude, London, Dunn, Wepner, and others were jokes as title threats. Yes, some of the people Vitali beat were also jokes. That's boxing unfortunately. Small? Yes! Even if the guy was almost as heavy as Ali at the time. Klitschko is at least 6'7" and about 250... so yeah... small!

Folley had a lot of talent as did Machen but you know and I know that he was too small and not durable enough to deal with Vitali. At least Patterson had power... but like these men he too wouldn't be able to deal with Vitali.

London was actually Commonewelath champions. same as say George Groves facing Carl Froch.
London actually had 2 title shots as well, he was by no means invalid to others outside ali. He was valid, he just was totally outclassed.

Dunn was EBU champ, therefore a valid defence, but a middling opponent.

Wepner was a weak defence, yes , but famous for being that weak stand-in exception for ali.

Its converse for vits - most of his title defences are middling Dunss to wepners.

My point was you can not be 100% sure. By the way Donald was in fine shape for Vitali. Check his weight and you'll see.

    McVey,

Is this some sort of joke. Ali fought the best out there, but did he re-match Foreman?

As for Vitali none of the above names were people he ducked. If you knew a bit more he was Tyson was on deck for Vitlail. THe two went on a photo tour ( Which I posted here ), but Danny Williams defeated Tyson.

Valuev and Haye backed out of fights with Vitali as well

The rest of the names were either Don King controlled, or not good enough.

Whats funny is you owning yourself all the time, like claiming Kleetchko wasn't KO'd by Reid with a spin kick in the FINALS of a Euro kick boxing championship in 92, when he was, and further claiming that you know more about cuts and how they affect a fighters vision than a qualified doctor.

Unfortunately for you those claims are not funny in a humorous sense, rather a " who's the weirdo " sense.:nut:nut

No. The rules say Backhands and laces are Illegal. I think you saw a backhand! Check the rules:

You cannot hit below the belt, hold, trip, kick, headbutt, wrestle, bite, spit on, or push your opponent.

You cannot hit with your head, shoulder, forearm, or elbow.

You cannot hit with an open glove, the inside of the glove, the wrist, the backhand, or the side of the hand.

You cannot punch your opponent's back, or the back of his head or neck (rabbit punch), or on the kidneys (kidney punch).

You cannot throw a punch while holding on to the ropes to gain leverage.

You can't hold your opponent and hit him at the same time, or duck so low that your head is below your opponent's belt line.

When the referee breaks you from a clinch, you have to take a full step back; you cannot immediately hit your opponent--that's called "hitting on the break" and is illegal.

You cannot spit out your mouthpiece on purpose to get a rest.
If you score a knockdown of your opponent, you must go to the farthest neutral corner while the referee makes the count.

If you "floor" your opponent, you cannot hit him when he's on the canvas.

A floored boxer has up to ten seconds to get back up on his feet before losing the bout by knockout.

A boxer who is knocked down cannot be saved by the bell in any round, depending upon the local jurisdiction's rules.

A boxer who is hit with an accidental low blow has up to five minutes to recover. If s/he cannot continue after five minutes, s/he is considered knocked out.

If the foul results in an injury that causes the fight to end immediately, the boxer who committed the foul is disqualified.

If the foul causes an injury but the bout continues, the referee orders the judges to deduct two points from the boxer who caused the injury.
If an unintentional foul causes the bout to be stopped immediately, the bout is ruled a "no contest" if four rounds have not been fully completed. (If the bout was scheduled for four rounds, then three rounds must have been completed.) If four rounds have been completed, the judges' scorecards are tallied and the fighter who is ahead on points is awarded a technical decision. If the scores are even, it will be called a "technical draw."

If a boxer is knocked out of the ring, he gets a count of 20 to get back in and on his feet. He cannot be assisted.

In some jurisdictions the standing eight-count or the three knockdown rule also may be in effect.

In other jurisdictions, only the referee can stop the bout.

This thread is not about whether Ali's challengers could or could not beat Vitali. Ali defended against ranked contenders.

Vitali many times did not, for example.
    Mahone
    Sulivan
    Solis
    Sosnowski
    Charr
    Briggs
    Chisora

Ali fought Dunn in between taking on Young and Norton. No 2 & no 1.
He fought London in between Cooper and Mildenberger, both ranked in the top ten
Vitali was a bottom feeder ,that's why he has no signature wins.
Ali by contrast fought everyone , as a result he has.
    Listonx2
    Frazierx3
    Foreman
    Nortonx3

    On his resume.

One was a true champion ,the other a cherry picker.DUDE

    Did Vitali rematch Byrd?

Vitali was a cherry picker, like his brother.
