Said by Larry Merchant during round 11 of Jones vs Hopkins for the Middleweight title, while Jones was confidently clowning Hopkins.

No slap against Larry, but pretty funny considering what both Roy and Hopkins accomplished later in their careers.

If Jones fights and beats Calzaghe, there could be arguments to rank him above Leonard.

Leonard was lucky enough ti have rivals like Duran, hearns and Hagler, Roy jones didnt have this luxury. RJJ doesnt have the equal amount of 'names' on his CV as Ray, but talent wise their isnt much between them.

I get a kick out of that too every time I watch that fight.

That was the timeframe when some politican said to some other politician that "I knew JFK, and you're no JFK" or something to that effect. Anyway, Merchant was just riffing on that.

Those guys had no idea how great either fighter would become, but especially Hopkins. The compliments he received were like "well-schooled, disciplined, technical, good defense," but not at all what they should have been.

Gil Clancy also compared one of Jones' defensive moves to those of Pernell Whitaker in that fight. Clancy was a *huge* Jones fan.

Creer wise its all Ray. Talentwise? Im not sure I've ever seen a fighter as naturally gifted and talented as Roy. That includes Floyd, Tyson, Ali, Robinson and Louis. But.......being the greatest talent doesn't always make you the greatest fighter.

What we know today and that Larry didn't know back then is that its impossible to look like SRL against Hopkins. He makes it impossibe.

I've always thought that was a bull**** statement from Merchant. It was his first title fight early on, obviously you couldn't compare him to Leonard at the time on anything more than ability, but for hm to say it like he was fighting like **** and that determined his career was ridiculous.
