Before he won the title in his bout with Eubank, He had been scheduled to fight Steve Collins who instead retired from boxing. Calzaghe in his autobiography states: " He [Collins] calculated that if he got in the ring with this young Calzaghe kid...there was just too much risk." He also says: "I think he knew he was going to be beaten." Well Calzaghe has stated he wishes to ignore Pavlik, and go for Roy Jones Jnr. He's also ignored a fight with Froch earlier. Collins dropped out of the fight citing that Joe 'couldn't fill a parish church' and that he wasn't a big enough name for Collins to fight- an attitude which Calzaghe was highly critical of. But right now, in the final hurdle of Joe's career, he dismisses the fights with Pavlick and Froch, Froch who he said wasn't a big enough name. Instead Calzaghe goes for the big name ageing fighter's like Roy Jones Jnr, despite the more challenging fights being with the younger fighters. This just echoes the Collins Calzaghe circumstances to me personally. Joe was critical of Collins reasons for pulling out of the fight, and yet years down the line, put in the same position, he replies almost the exact same response as Steve did. This to me just seems hypocritical. If they aren't that good fighters, or not big enough, then deal with the up and comer's swiftly and move on to the Jones Jnr's. In my humble opinion he is ducking the harder fights to go for the older fighters who, in all fairness to them, are not in their prime fighting years. Reference: All my quotations and views are based on information presented in Calzaghe's autobiography: 'No Ordinary Joe.'
I do know where your coming from, however. Joe is getting on and is probably sick of hearing that this young lion is going to beat him. Lacy and Kessler were going to destroy him. I think that joe feels he has proven himself and is just wanting to get a legend on his resume. I think its fair enough. I dont feel that pavlik is that much of a threat to joe and dont feel that it would add that much to his resume
:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl You might have made some really good points in the latter part of your post, but I had to stop reading at this point due to the tears in my eyes.
I have no complaints with JC not taking the Froch fight but I was just trying to make the point that JC was once in Frochs position and I think JC could have fought him instead of Manfredo who is not even world class!
The point of the Manfredo fight was US TV exposure. Which enabled him to maneouvre a position for later fights. Froch wouldn't have acheived that.
What has Froch actually done to prove he can cut it world level let alone be able to compete with Calzaghe? He hasn't even won the European belt yet or fought a contender.
If Joe wants to have RJJ as his farewell fight it's understandable. But, the way he's handling it isn't. He could have just given props to Pavlik as a potential opponent, and said that the reason he is choosing Jones is because he has wanted that fight for over a decade. Instead he says Kelly doesn't want to fight him and isn't worthy, Joe just comes across like an ass.
He really does make an ass of himself if you consider his recent comments in light of this interview. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWDtzdAYTOA
The point of this thread is just to make the point that JC was once in K.Pavliks position and knows what it his like to be ducked by the older fight when you are the rising star!
But Froch is in the exact same position Calzaghe was when a bout with Collins was rejected. Regardless of how you rate Froch, there is an obvious comparison to be made between the two cases.
Froch might be in the same position as Calzaghe but it's only an obvious comparison if you think that Collins then = Calzaghe now. Collins was WBO supermiddleweight champion, arguably the number one in the division. Calzaghe is ring champion and number one at two weights. The more realistic comparison to the situation Froch is in now with Calzaghe would be the pre-Eubank Calzaghe with Roy Jones Junior.
