J.J. Braddock (Lineal Champ) vs Bruce Seldon (WBA Champ).
Battle between 2 guys whose names have faded into the past.

    James J. Braddock:
Beats Baer for title. Drops Louis in his one defense attempt, but loses in 8 by k.o.
Braddock suffered from problems with his arthritic hands after injuries throughout his career and, in 1936, his title defense in Madison Square Garden against the German Max Schmeling was canceled under suspicious circumstances. Braddock argued he would have received only a US$25,000 purse against Schmeling, compared to $250,000 against rising star Joe Louis. There was also concern that if Schmeling won, the Nazi government would deny American fighters opportunities to fight for the title.[8] Finally, American commentators had expressed opposition to the fight in light of the connections between Schmeling and Adolf Hitler, with whom the German fighter had been associated after his earlier victory over Loui

    Bruce Seldon:
After seven straight wins, Seldon fought former IBF heavyweight champion Tony Tucker On April 8, 1995 for the vacant WBA heavyweight championship. George Foreman was stripped of the title for fighting Axel Schulz instead of Tucker, the organization's top contender. Seldon, ranked second by the WBA, stopped Tucker at the end of round seven to claim the vacant title. It was the first stoppage loss of Tucker's career (his two previous losses were decisions to Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis). In the lone successful defense of his title, Seldon stopped fourth-ranked contender Joe Hipp in the tenth round. Thirteen months later, he would lose the title to Mike Tyson via first-round TKO at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

You'd never know it unless you watched him pre Bowe, but Seldon had a very good jab, fast hands and skills.

Its true. Okay, he had the chin of a super middle weight, but he's in a match up here vs a less skilled smaller guy who doesn't hit hard.

    Seldon UD.

Good analysis ^. People forget Seldon at one time was well thought of.

I don't see Braddock dropping Bruce as Bowe and Tyson did ,so he'd have to out point him. But Bruce had a decent jab and JJ would struggle with it .Seldonthe stronger guy would have no problems out muscling him as well .So I don't see Braddock to be honest getting a win here .

Braddock actually had a decent punch. He had a lot of problems with his hands.

I think he gets very underrated in general. Seems weird that he's rated so much lower than Max Baer.

    This is a mismatch.

If Braddock is anywhere near his best form, then he should take this.

Seldon out-athletes. Braddock never sees sunlight past that jab. Cut and dry. Even a bit embarrassing.

Tyson didn't drop Seldon. That was a dive.

I recommend watching Seldon vs McCall. A good one. Seldon actually hurts McCall before losing late. And after that one whatever heart he had became smaller in future fights. The 1990's Many top heavyweight fights.

Heart? I think he switched sports and became a professional diver, like Bob Sapp.

It probably was, but even if he hadn't dived he'd have being flattened. And probably in the same round .

Exactly, I remember an old Ring article about Seldon and they wrote about his athletic ability and his dunks on the basketball courts of Atlantic City. You're right, Seldon would out athlete Braddock and at 6-2, 225-35 he could probably have dominated the NBA and NFL of Braddock's time if they would ignore the color line and let him play.

Sometimes being the better athlete is enough. Sometimes it is not.

I've said as much myself. The most probable reason for the dive, much like the Stewart fight, was not to ensure the victory but to ensure that cash cow Tyson would look especially invincible on the comeback trail (post Douglas and post prison, respectively).
