He took some serious shots from Ruiz too which people don't seem to realize. They even showed some of the clean shots Ruiz landed on him between rounds in slow mo.
He did well to take tarvers punches too.
In the rematch he looked better and tarver just caught him with a wild shot, and with toys style that was always going to happen eventually.
The KO that actually ruined his career was Glen Johnson.
He looked horrendous in that fight before being KO'd, he had 0 legs as if his coordination hadn't returned. He took a beating against the ropes for 9 rounds, lost every damn round and then got knocked down and hit the back of his head against the canvas.

And like Emmanuel steward says.if you get KOd twice in a row too close together you can never take a good shot again.

After tarver 1 would have been the perfect time to retire. The tough win vs tarver would only help his legacy by adding the "facing adversity" aspect that the old timers seem to be fixated on

I don’t want to hear anymore from Prince after he put a stop to the Pusha T v Drake beef just as it was heating up.

1986-1991 Tyson was dangerous for 8-10 rounds

1996-2000 Tyson was dangerous for 4-6 rounds

Fat 230+lb Tyson of the 2000s only had 1-3 good rounds in him. he would gass before he catches Jones.

He had his reasons. The biggest one was Drake had an album that was about to drop and it was bad for business.

I doubt he’ll ever admit it, but he absolutely should have stayed at HW, or moved to CW and played there.

His management was so utterly stupid.

Roy also took on the much harder fights towards the end when he was shot, which I also didn’t get. I dogged him when he was fighting stiffs, but respected him when he took on these top notch guys when past it.

Very odd career after the Tarver loss.

It's easier to take on tougher challenges when your aura of invincibility has been completely shattered. A lot less to lose.

True but he would have beaten a lot of those guys. I would have picked him over BHop and Calzaghe in 2001. By the time he fought them in 2005/6 or whatever it was, he was done.

Pusha T murdered Drake, and likely would have murdered him again had Drake responded. That would have been extremely bad for business with Drake's album about to drop.

To be honest, it was never going to end well.

If it hadn't have been Tarver, it'd have been someone else.

He needed to either retire early, or change his style to compensate for his age.

If he'd have landed flush, that goes without saying. But I would honestly have favoured the Ruiz version of Roy to have beaten that version of Mike. He had zero interest in boxing at that point, and he was just fighting purely for the money.

He was never the same after the weight loss. And neither was Tarver when he fought Bernard. And the same thing happened to Chris Byrd and Chad Dawson too.

Regarding the knockout loss to Tarver, I've seen him give a few different responses. It depends what mood he's in at that time. I've heard him give Tarver credit, and I've also heard him say that Tarver had his eyes shut and it was a lottery punch.

I've never heard him specifically blame the weight loss for the knockout. But it had to be a factor. Diminished reflexes and punch resistance etc.

He said many times that he would only have remained at HW for ridiculous money.

He had no interest in those guys.

I used to think the same a long time ago. But I don't anymore. Because I know that if Roy had beaten Tarver in the rematch as well as Johnson etc, he would have just carried on like he has done.

He's admitted with hindsight, that he should have taken a long lay off after the first Tarver fight. But you can't do that when you're living in the moment.

You can't blame his management. He was his own man. Mackie Shilstone told him not to take the Tarver fight.

One of the main reasons that Roy took harder fights later in his career, is because that guys like Bernard and Joe would only fight him when he'd diminished. Both of them on are on record as saying that they wanted nothing to do with him as he was shot and no longer 'Superman' etc, before they both did a u-turn and contacted him for a fight. Yet when it mattered, there were nowhere to be found.

It's also easier to get guys to fight you when the element of risk isn't as high as what it once was.
