I once saw Tyson practicing a jab to the body followed by an overhand right. I don't see the point of a jab to the body, when would you want to do this?
You jab to the body and your opponent puts his hand/s down to protect his body. Now with the opponents head unprotected you throw the right. :thumbsup
Yea, I like using it, particularly for this combo. Once you establish it, you can use it consistently to slow your opponent with stiffnes hitting the body, or maintain range without reaching in up top, or you can start to feint it once your opponent becomes wary of it, and it helps set up other shots. When I run out of ideas I start to jab to the body.
The jab low, right high combo is probably my most damaging one. I haven't use it in a while because I've been working on other things but that has gotten me more knockdowns than any other combination and as a minimum tends to 'buzz' guys.
Try to use this combo as often as possible. Get your opponent to guard his midsection and BANG! bring an overhand right to his chin. Hearns' KO of Roberto Duran is a classic example of how this works in the ring.
Jabbing to the body is great. My favorite thing to do is frustrate guys by slipping their jab and jabbing them downstairs. It's easy to see the punch land so boom, there's a point, and it annoys them. Then I bring the right hand behind that body jab...or I pivot to my right while I throw the jab, turn them by pushing their left shoulder with my right hand, then come over the top from behind/to the side of them with that right hand right to the earhole. And then my favorite part. Get em used to all that stuff, then slip their jab, jab to the body, and come up with a right uppercut.
thats how mosley hurt mayweather if memory serves.jabbing to the body then threw the big right hand damn didnt realise that had already been said!
If you watch Mayweather, you'll see he also throws the jab to the stomach by itself to take a little steam out his opponent and to bring his hands down. After a while he'll make the motion as if he's jabbing down there and then hook up top. Watch Mayweather vs Corrales for an example of this
It definetaly is a a good tool to use the jab/feint down low to set up upstairs especially in close type fighters who might become predictable finding a way in. One thing to watch out for though when using the jab to the body is not to lunge in with it and put too much weight behind it,as this leaves you exposed to your opponents right or left hand. It should be a sharp movement or a realistic feint.
Agreed - it's easy to over-commit to this punch. It should just be a flick to get an opponent's guard down.
