That’s a little misleading for a couple of reasons. It was fully evolved to the modern standard by the 50s, but it hadn’t been for very long. So there’s been a much bigger pool to choose from after that point. 70 years worth of fights since compared to maybe a decade‘s worth prior. Not to mention that other important difference: footage.

Even though he lost the fight Jake LaMotta had a sneaky, powerful upjab he used against taller fighters. He had good success with walking down Ray for 11 rounds. LaMotta was scoring with his jab consistantly. He was giving away height as well.
