None of that is true. Sky has already decided in the past to downgrade boxing and make it filler time, as opposed to high financial reward. They could easily do it again aside from PPVs as @Trafford said. I'm no big fan of DAZN and have no idea how long it can be sustained, but DAZN is not Matchroom Boxing. Clearly the latter is still the top promoter in the UK and growing well beyond that. If DAZN was on the ropes or left any market, Matchroom would find a home anywhere else it wanted to. EDIT: I said "none of that is true" but kind of agree Boxxer is crap, most of the time.
Just to echo your point, DAZN have many other shows other than Matchroom shows. They work with Golden Boy, Most Valuable Promotions, Dmitry Salita, and Overtime Boxing to broadcast shows in the US and Mexico, all of which we can watch in the UK. There's a World Title fight in Puerto Rico that will be on DAZN on Saturday night. There was also a small-hall US show last week. DAZN have a lot of boxing outside of Matchroom shows, although Matchroom do have the best quality out of all the promoters that DAZN work with. Again not trying to hate, but although Catterall vs Linares is a terrible main event, you could just say this is the equivalent if not better of their chief support Reece Bellotti vs Aqib Fiaz for the Commonwealth Title headlining a show at York Hall like Boxxer doing a show headlined by Fraser Clarke or Caroline Dubois, and Queensberry doing York Hall shows headlined by David Adeleye against European no-hopers, Ellis Zorro vs Hosea Burton, or Masood Abdullah vs Marc Leach.
Didn’t mean Matchroom I meant DAZN as a whole. Lying, thieving fookers. Becoming a bit of a laughing stock with all their influencer crap. Although Matchroom aren’t the company they think they are either.
Fair enough. Their support and some of the seeming tricks they use to avoid cancellations are poor. And very poor value overall. We can agree to disagree on Matchroom, it's a stable, successful business which will always look after itself first, and its most loyal sports people second.
I don’t agree with that, not with their current crop of boxers. They have no stars with longevity now. AJ will be retired soon and they have no one else on that level.
a and unlike FW, they pay people properly. I am amazed anyone works with old One Lung, after how much he was robbed fighters. He's a hop and skip from Don King.
Despite being a dreadful fight, it looks like 6000+ tickets have been sold. The lower tier has almost completely sold out. This clashes with Buatsi vs Azeez at the 02 - I think more people might have bought tickets for Catterall vs Linares over that which is a shock. A lot of fighters from Manchester are on the Liverpool card. Hopefully Top Rank allow Taylor to rematch Catterall in the UK next. It's one of the biggest domestic fights to be made. Remember that the rematch was originally scheduled for the start of 2023 on PPV on Sky Sports Box Office. DAZN definitely won't put it on PPV which is great for the fans.
Mate we’ve been over this 1000 times yes it’s not PPV but you still have to pay 20 quid for the month (or 120 for the year) and will be lucky to get another UK show that month as part of the deal.
A shame. Masoud and McGrail are two of the best British prospects at 122 so it would have been nice to compare their performances. Not the end of the world as the main card had 6 bouts anyway, so Campbell Hatton will get bumped up to the main card. Khaleel Majid vs Tom Farrell is an intriguing fight, and Aqib Fiaz vs Reece Bellotti will steal the show. Seems like Jack Turner will fight late on before the chief support in a 4-rounder.
I'm hoping from what I've seen of Linares this week he manages to roll back the years a little bit. Obviously recent form would lead you to believe he's long past his best but if there's just one more night in him where he can dig out a performance I hope it's tomorrow and we have a good main event.
Agree. Catterall has been a bit too full of himself this week - respectful one minute and "it's my time now" the next. Nobody cares.
I've been surprised by the reported number of tickets he's sold personally. Considering it's not in his hometown nor has he aligned himself with a football club, even with a bit of promoter exaggeration on top, it's impressive. Is he just very a popular lad in Chorley? I've not really paid too much attention to him in the past.
He’s sold 2000 tickets. Incredible number. Aqib Fiaz, Peter Mcgrail and Jack Turner have also sold a lot. Between 6000 and 7000 expected. Great turnout compared to most UK shows nowadays. I wonder where Catterall vs Taylor II takes place - in Manchester or Glasgow. They could do big numbers in Manchester and can have a lot of local fighters on the card.
