They were great for there time certainly just think it should be considered when rankings. Boxing wasnt as organised in terms of belts etc, it was based on everyone said was the man, then so forth, who beat the man became the man.

For example from 1910 to 1928 the heavyweight title was contested on 15 occasions...that less than 1 a year.

Hardly what i call huge activity or an organised sport.

Marciano isn't far removed skills wise and unlike Mike he's very efficient. Marciano on film and, I used to mistakenly consider him an unskilled slugger, but have grown to appreciate his defensive crouch, his countering and timing, his punch technique, his punch picking. Do you think Mike can throw combinations like that for 12rounds let alone 15? Can Mike maintain his head movement into the later rounds? Marciano isn't as flashy in the early rounds but he maintains his power and defence late. I don't think he'd beat some of the bigger greats including Tyson mind you

I can't believe people are coming to conclusions from comparing the fighters from old footage of them hitting the heavy bags. It just so happens Tyson was going at full speed while Dempsey and Marciano clearly weren't,they were basically messing around.

Dempsey was a great, but he looks like a caveman on the heavybag, lets be honest

Marciano on the other hand, was slow but efficient, I don't think people understand all the subtleties to his game, he had skill

I was talking more about Dempsey than Marciano. imho Marciano was a bit like Robinson, his style was ahead of his time. I think he'd be an excellent LH or cruiserweight today. Those compact punches and bobbing and weaving head movements would work in any era.

Also, Tyson of 86 and before could indeed throw and move like that for 12 rounds.

generational bias has to stop. I like fighters of old, but most of them would get crushed by modern fighers. Yea I said it...

that said, the videos are good.

That rowing machine is a great pic

Also agree that Marciano seemed ahead of his time, real skilled customer who would be a great light heavyweight in todays game

boxing is timing. technique is thrown out the window when it comes to getting to the target on time. trumps everything else.

Can anyone picture an oldschool champ like Dempsey with a modern day HW champ like Bowe, Lewis or Wlad? It would be a total massacre.

If Vitali - Adamek was an embarassing, one-sided beatdown then what would Lewis - Dempsey be?

yeah, that's why guys with great timing are always walking in off the street and getting belts.

You do all know that jack was tysons fav fighter maybe ever right ?, he copied his shorts, his walk into the ring, and hell in some ways his all out attack, but of course with benefit of 80s training and knowledge, so if you slag jack off just remember that tyson would not agree with you at all, he loved the man

I think they could survive in today's HW division since condtioning seems to be missing today ..
