Pretty sure they sparred with 8 oz. gloves, though having gone at it with both 8 and 10 ounce gloves, there is not a whole lot difference. Greb had Dempsey got by far the better of it. The fight didn't happen because it was a very high risk affair that might relinquish the title from Rickard's greedy paws.
Now, there is an "amen". Can you imagine todays fighters sparring with 8 or 10 oz gloves, those were some tough guys. I manage fighters so I tend to look at things from a managers POV. If I was Kearns I would've done the same thing.
Yes , Jack Kearns reluctance to match his heavyweight money machine Jack Dempsey with the MW great Harry Greb was a "high risk" situation. But the other part of the equation was that it was certainly - A NO WIN situation . If Dempsey should catch up to Greb and flatten him, the boxing public would bellow " why don't Dempsey pick on someone his own size, the big bully ". Yep, a "no win situation" better left undone...
Why risk the title when you can completely manufacture safe opponents like Carpentier out of thin air and still set gate records?
Even a neophyte in boxing history should know that Georges Carpentier was the idol of France and was a helluva great attraction and say what you will about Carpentier, he had a laser right hand ,combined with Hollywood good looks, and made money at the gate for everyone involved...Somehow S, I suspect you a bright man and in Dempsey's camp would have DONE the same thing matching Dempsey with Carpentier drawing 80,000 fans and almost $2,000,000 at the gate. A fantastic sum of money for those times. Ah, hypocrisy is live and well today...atsch
So, he required a fixed fight to give even remote credibility as a challenger to the Dempsey's crown? I've been reading over many articles up to the fight and no one in the US, NO ONE, took Carpentier to be a legit threat as the fight drew near. Yes, it was a cash grab. But this is Prize Fighting. If we are to rank great prize collectors of the sport, Dempsey & Co. are high on the list.
Top 3, Lord you have a funny way of showing it, but better late than never...Let us raise our mugs to Jack Dempsey, a helluva fighter and revered gentleman in retirement ! cheers...
Yes, a victory over Joe Becket rings as sound as multiple wins over Brennan, Gibbons and Miske. You got me there.
