I think that we have said as much as can constructively be said on the subject for now.

The color line unofficially lasted until Marciano. Joe Louis only defended against two blacks.

It was put to rest, Burt. Someone felt compelled to dig up a years-old thread.

But as long as it is revived, I think I have some life to breathe into its corpse. I'll be back as time allows to such. Cheers!

Dempsey signed to fight Wills several times. In each instant, outside pressures forced the fight to be called off.

Easy to sign your name when the signature is worth less than the paper its printed on and you know you will never have to stare across the ring at the Wills.

Oh please stop beating this dead horse already it's just a pile of bones turning to dust. most of the Dempsey - wills contemporaries thought Dempsey would beat him. Why not start another thread, "Who really drew the colorline, Greb or SRR" or ''Why did Johnson, Louis and SRR not defend their titles vs the top black fighters?'' or "what is the real reason the colorline was drawn by both black and white ATG's? Those would be interesting and start new discussions rather then revisit Dempsey vs Wills again and again. Wills was no monster you know so why make a big deal about it.

As long as idiot fanboys rinse and repeat that they THINK Dempsey would have beaten Wills I will repeat that if Dempsey had as much confidence in his ability as his fans he would have actually gone through with the fight instead of using every form of skulduggery to avoid it. That simple fact, the fact that HE ACTIVELY DUCKED THE BEST FIGHTERS AVAILABLE is why this subject continues to come up and will continue to haunt and be a black mark on his legacy. As long as you mention Dempsey's name this subject will come up. It may prove an irritation to the morons who want to believe that Dempsey was this inhuman wrecking machine but they should come to terms with this because it aint going away.

Well I suppose I am a "moron" [your words] along with great multitudes of fighters, boxing writers, fight trainers and boxing fans who saw Dempsey fight
and thought so highly of him at his best...Were they ALL morons too K ?
Harry Wills a fine fighter no doubt never disparaged Jack Dempsey over the years, and I repeat they did sign once for a bout that was cancelled because the Michigan promoter could not come up with the promised money...
As far as my idol Harry Greb being "ducked" by Dempsey...Well if I were
Dempsey;'s braintrust Jack Kearns etc, I too would have avoided this
NO WIN fight with the marvelous middleweight Harry Greb for it would have been truly a "no win" situation for Jack Dempsey...An example would be in later years the great Joe Louis camp never wanted to give the LH Maxie Rosenbloom a title shot, because his advisers knew that even if Louis would have beaten Rosenbloom, he wouldn't have looked good even on victory.
Boxing after all is said and done is a "business "after all...Summing up
YES Jack Dempsey in his hayday was a helluva fighter...

Dempsey and Wills didn't go from state to state signing contracts and the promoters didn't print tickets as part of an elaborate hoax.

The fighters wanted to fight. But different individuals blocked it (for their own reasons). For example, the NY Athletic Commission insisted the two fight, and the governor of NY (Al Smith) told Dempsey and Rickard not to do it. The governor appoints people to sit on the athletic commission. So it didn't happen in New York. The Athletic Commission and the Governor were at odds, but Dempsey and Rickard sided with the governor. Then the Athletic Commission wouldn't let Dempsey fight in New York. It was just a ****ing match between bureaucrats.

Everybody in the 1920s wasn't jumping up and down for Dempsey to fight Wills, only to have Dempsey refuse. Some people would try to stage it, and others would block it.
