It doesn't matter. Within any punch mechanic there is a range of choices. You've gone on and on and on about Dempsey using the same move. This is nonsense. Even if that is true, Dempsey can switch his wrist. He can use it to lift his punch X or drop his punch Y. When you pretend you can see through Sharkey to the termination of the punch, you neglect this. Secondly, ANY punch is defined as to its landing point by distance. That is obvious. If the distance betwen them is 14" when he throws the first punch and 12" when he throws the last, it will terminate on a different part of the body each time if it is identically thrown. Finally, his elbow extension. If he holds the punch by the elbow, it lands lower. But you can't see this. You neglect this. Your ****ysis is childish, two dimensional and unrealistic. Do YOU know how to box? This is not first month stuff we're talking about - in a good gym, not first year. But it is covered. But you seem to have no idea about it at all.
Dempseys punches traveled much shorter than a foot. No indication whatsoever that any of the three punches were low and the ref who was in perfect position to see that last right hand stated that it was not low. Last time I checked a referee has the deciding vote in terms of what occurred in a boxing ring. He stated that last punch was not low. Very funny how some on here were claiming Dempsey hit Sharkey in the ***** and then once pressed to watch the bout now resort to "well ....you can't see that last punch". I've trained in several of NY downtown boxing gyms over the years. Sparred in Fraziers Gym in Philia back in the 80's. Went to many big cards back in the 70's at MSG. Watch the three punch sequence in regular and slow motion and note how it was just three consecutive right uppercuts very quickly one after another in the same spot. Where is that punch to the ***** some were talking about?
Yes, i know that. I was just giving you an example of how the mechanics of boxing work. this is total nonsense 1 - The reaction of Sharkey 2 - The reaction of ringsiders 3 - The reaction of many journalists who saw the film 4 - The reaction of many posters who saw the film. What are you talking about, it's like you just clicked on the thread? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJ8PPwetm4Q Who? Nobody has pressed me, and i DO NOT say the last punch was low. What i'm saying is that you can't see the last punch and that you are pretending too KNOW where, exactly, it lands. I am also saying that this is dishonest on your part. It's impossible to tell where the third punch lands, obviously. 1) You CANNOT see what Dempsey does with his wrist 2) You CANNOT see what Dempsey does with the leverage on his forearm 3) Both fighters are moving during the combo and you CANNOT see where the punch lands. Which of the above are untrue?
Do you people ever get laid? Jesus... Jack did what a lot of fighters did, foul, and kept doing it because the ref didn't know what to do about it. Big deal. He won the fight. Ali, Lewis, Holy, Marciano... all did similar stuff.
I've posted the comments of the ref and he Is very clear..can't you read? He was right there in the ring and was in great position to see that last punch. HE STATED THE PUNCH WAS NOT LOW. It is also documented that Sharkey wore his trunks high on his waist. I've posted three headlines from newspapers that stated The film shown in the days after the bout showed the punches were NOT low and the majority viewing the film felt the blows were fair. You stated these headlines did not exist. You were wrong. There are many more! The idea that the crowd was in an uproar over a low blow is not factual. The stadium shook from the crowds excitement. The hats being thrown into the ring was a sign of this excitement. The crowd was not in a frenzy because of a foul but instead because of a spectacular KO. Again it's amazing that posters who stated the body punches were to the ***** now are either silient or claiming oh well you can't clearly see the last punch. The ref saw that punch and he said it was not low. To make Dempseys punch low enough to be in the groin he would have to drop his arm and or shoulder. He did neither. ****ing his wrist one way or another would not make the punch low. Finally these were three split second punches..one two three consecutive and very quick. Posters who stated the punches were low are looking at the fact the punches landed on Sharkeys beltline/trunks and since they are on the trucks they extrapolate that means they are low. UNTRUE! A low blow must be below an imaginary line that joins the hip bones. Nothing to do with where they land on the trunks as trunks can be worn high or low. In Sharkeys case as I have posted he wore his trunks HIGH on his waist.
Default Re: Jack Dempsey and The Color Line... Pictures disprove Sharkeys claim" Blows that contributed to Dempseys victory apparently Fair slow movie shows The official slow motion pictures of the Dempsey Sharkey fight were shown at Yankee stadium last night showing the milling in the seventh round. This revealed that the disputed blow which contributed to Dempseys victory was fair. The film was only shown to newspaper reporters. The film was run three times to permit the newspapermen to compare there judgements. The slow motion of the fighters show that Dempsey struck three hard rights to the stomach of Sharkey before delivering the left hook that knocked out his opponent. The pictures showed that Sharkey was wearing his trunks higher than Dempsey which led the newspapermen to conclude this fact may have contributed to the confusion of the bouts end. Rickard watching the film leaned intently forward in his chair. There is the right hand it lands in the pit of the stomach. Now the left to the jaw. That's the knockout. All very clear. The pictures showed a great majority of Dempseys blows were to the body. They were short vicious jabs and hooks to the ribs or pit of the stomach. The continual raining of these blows caused Sharkey to slow up after round 4. When the final blows were delivered the fighters were at a slight angle. Dempseys heavy upper thrusts appeared just on the beltline of Sharkeys trunks. Some of the observers thought these blows were close to the line. A FEW OF THE NEWSPAPER CRITICS STILL CLAIM THE DISPUTED BLOW WAS LOW BUT THE MAJORITY AGREED THE PUNCHES WERE FAIR.
"To the MAJORITY at ringside it appeared to be a fair blow. The crowd entertained no doubt as to the fairness of Dempseys victory. " The Republican Journal.
The Republic Journal Ogdensburg NY Comeback victory against Sailor stamps Dempsey as worlds mightiest fighter. Ex champ kos Sharkey in 7th by terrific attack A terrific right to the pit of the stomach doubled Sharkey up and a crashing left brought the Boston giant down for the count. Dempsey fought and won because he refused to be beaten back or balked
St Petersburg press "Need of an Alibi" The foul claim by Sharkey was bound to be snatched at by a considerable number of experts who had almost unanimously declared Sharkey would win the fight. At this sudden conclusion they and Sharkey were in so much in need of an alibi. When the whole affair has been sifted down to the last sift the fact remains that Dempsey won because he would not give up and Sharkey did because he would. For a time it appeared the body blows did not bother Sharkey then they appeared to annoy him. Finally it was apparent that he was downright disgusted with that sort of thing. He could not understand why his own flashing punches were not causing the "hollow shell" to crack. He probably will never understand that the first crack that materialized was that one flush on his jaw. Although the record book will show Dempsey won by a series of body blows follies by a left hook flush on the chin that ended the fight these were nearly incidental as it was Dempseys heart that won this battle and Sharkeys lack of heart lost it.
The Day. New London. Conn. Ref Sullivan "The blow that preceded the KO blow which was a left to the jaw was a fairly delivered one. It was a right uppercut that landed right on the waistline but not below. It is true that Dempsey landed several times below the waistline in previous rounds but in no case were the punches injurious or deliberate not was there any protest made by Sharkey previous to that final round." If you look at the bout on video the final body blow was indeed a right uppercut to the body.
Northern Star. July 25 1927. Doctor who examined Sharkey: "I examined Sharkey after the bout. I saw no evidence that any low blows had being struck" "Dempsey won the bout with a terrific left hook to the jaw as Sharkey was sagging making a signal that the previous body blow was low. The victory sent the crowd in a delirious outburst. Sharkey took the count after receiving A RIGHT TO THE PIT OF THE STOMACH AND A CRASHING LEFT TO THE JAW. A doctor examined Sharkey after the fight and stated that there was no evidence that Sharkey had been hit low."
