    Agree or disagree?

For reasons I've stated a few times on different threads I just can't make my mind up.

Against Willard and Gibbons he looks amazing. Against Firpo and Carpentier he looks as if he's never defended a punch in his life.

Do you agree or disagree with the thread title?

    Definitely top 5 for me.

One of the most dynamic boxers I've ever seen. And that fight with Carpentier was one sided. He lifted Georges off the ground with body uppercuts in the first 30 seconds of the fight, but held him up. At least that's what I saw.

Voted No. I don't see him beating the best of the big heavies, I think he struggles like hell with Foreman, Tyson and possibly Liston. Ali too.
To be honest, I don't give him better than 50/50 against Marciano or Louis.

So not close to top 5 for me.

I don't think it'd be close between Dempsey and Louis and I think Rocky outlasts the mauler.

I'm sorry but I simply don't see or understand all the love that Dempsey gets. He's a man who defended his title only 6 times in 7 years.. Beat opposition that by all standards should be considered as abysmal... Won the title from a 37 year old man who hadn't fought in 3 years and wasn't terribly good to begin with.. Avoided top challengers in his era and often because they were black ( I know this always opens a can of worms on here. ) Was knocked through the ropes by a fighter who wasn't any better than Joe Hipp and needed assistance getting back into the ring..And was knocked out in one round by Fireman Flynn... Of course I realize that he looked absolutely brutal putting guys away and in truth DID appear impressive. But on a far lesser scale, Tommy Morrison and Alex Garcia looked somewhat Dempseyesque in many of their performances too.. It didn't mean they were top five head to head monsters....

It was no more of a trolling statement than your claim that Norton was prime against Jose Garcia or half the comments you've made in the short time you've been lurking here.

    You've said it yourself.

The impressive displays he's put together on film.

The final piece of the puzzle for me was the head movement to slip 6 punches in a row from Tunney, a man classed as one of the most accurate technical boxers in history.

The question becomes, as the level of opposition increased, would prime Dempsey still look like a killer.

well. I was not the only one. You got an answer from another poster with my same opinion, you are the idiot with the argument "pre prime" , or lyle was not a big puncher cause the poor number of ranked contenders that he stopped?(so ali did hit harder than lyle right?). You are the stupid who said that holyfield did hit harder than lyle shot for shot lmao.Leroy caldwell rated lyle in the same level of forman at Puncher And george himself did put lyle over williams, frazier, liston etc at puncher but we must believe in the word of Mr magoo,( the most ugly guy in this forum, a pink pig blowing pagpipes in his own pick lol)

Extremely difficult to say with any accuracy. I think because of his size it is perhaps unlikely.
