Dempsey was a beautiful boxer-swarmer. He was the first modern heavyweight champ to me, his style was much more "modern" than

I just wish we had high quality footage from his pre title peak.

To my knowledge, there is no footage of Dempsey from his pre title days.

I do wish Dempsey was born 20 years later than when he was actually born. There would be so much more quality footage of him.

 

Dempsey was pretty quick and athletic. The problem is many times the slip and duck defense, which he could make work is out to lunch. He's hit with accuracy on film quite a bit, and his energy levels ( Which the slip and duck requires ) tends to fall off in the mid to later rounds.

Mike Tyson had a pretty good defense when he was younger in the early rounds too, but it evaporated as the rounds went on.

 

Dempsey most certainly had a style all of his own.

 

His own wife, Maxine, called him a 4 round fighter.

But, for his day, it was a pretty damn good four rounds.

 

I don't know who to interpret that. Was she talking about in the ring or somewhere else? Maxine, a former prostitute would certainly be an authority on the later.
