This is Dempsey sparring Big Bill Tate (in preparation for Willard) - important as along with the Willard match it is the only film we have on Dempsey at his peak - even though a public sparring match you get the impression that this was as much of a fight for survival for Tate as any competetive fight was that he ever had - anyone who doesn't realise just how much zest and zip Dempsey had lost by the time of the Tunney matches needs to watch this [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wxHY3p9DiQ&feature=related[/ame]
best film of dempsey hands down, hes not rushing going wild as was with willard which had to be done to put him down for keeps. really shows his skill...
Slight correction to my words above - theres training footage here of Dempsey in the same period from about the 2:06 mark of this vid up to about 2:45 - which gives us a couple of other brief bits of sparring film of the young pre-willard Demps - he looks so light and springy on his feet - constantly moving [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4iBHrHTf-k&feature=related[/ame]
Willard Sharkey Tunney 1 and 2 Gibbons Brennan And quite a few exhibitions matches. For a real laugh, watch Dempsey vs. Cowboy Lutrell.
Thanks everybody. I wanna see anything of Dempsey but I don't wanna look for something that just can't be found. ;-)
Another correction to my previous - on here there is more pre-Willard sparring match footage vs Jamaica Kid (from about 3:05 to about 3:45) and vs Jack Malone (from about 6:20 to about 7:08) - this is part 2 of 5 of extensive before/surrounding/during/after footage of the famous Dempsey-Willard title match [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTcZ03C-kR8&feature=related[/ame]
Thank you Rocky for posting this clip of Jack Dempsey in his prime... Look at the difference between this catlike dempsey, even in training and the older past prime, and rusty Jack of the Tunney fights seven and eight years later...Even in this old film you can see his taut , hard and muscular body, which gave him the speed of a much smaller middleweight...Not for nothing ,did Sam Langford and others call THIS version of Jack Dempsey, the greatest heavyweight, they had seen...How i would love to see the Dempsey who destroyed the large highly regarded Fred Fulton in one minute in 1918...The roughest infighter that ever lived I say...Thanks again for this rare clip of the young Manassa Mauler...b.,b.
Larry Gains who was Canadian Champ at the time sparred with Dempsey.Gains said every round was all out war,and the relief on his sparring partners faces if they were not picked to spar was," something to see".Gains said , only Codfrey weathered the storm reasonably well.
Cheers Burt, Dempsey looks brilliant in these clips - he's looks so light on his feet so quick and bouncy and yet he had such vicious punching - speed and hand and foot - very very difficult to catch - it's kind of how I imagine Harry Greb in his pomp too - a brilliant mix of speed and power - the feet of a ballet dancer and the aggressiveness and power of a pitbull plus a granite chin - and he looked so lean and mean too - this Dempsey for me would be able to cope with any fancy boxer types too (including Muhammad Ali) because he was just as quick going forward as any other going backward and just as elusive
Before I read the caption I saw right away the spring in Dempsey's legs that he had in the Willard bout and that was gone by the time he fought Gene. Then I read it was preparing for the Willard bout, you can see the differance right away along with the constant head movement.
Rocky, you said it...This young Dempsey would have been a nightmare for Ali..Ali's main advantage in his bouts was speed..The Dempsey of Toledo was described [AND SEEN HERE ]as being as fast as a welterweight on his feet, and head movement...this would nullify Ali's game, and he would pay for it,methinks...This clip in 1919 justifies to me what the writers and fighters of his prime thought of the Manassa Mauler...When he went all out, he was a "tiger"...In my book there is Dempsey and prime Louis.... Dempsey was the bigger and original version of Roberto Duran .....
