Jess was a monster and presumably a very strong guy too. being 37 years of age and off for a long period lessened the value of the win in my eyes, but that doesn't change the fact that he was a monster.

I've said this before but I think I'll do it agian. My grandfather.. till the day he died said Dempsey was the best HW boxer that ever lived. He was convinced nobody after him... not Joe.. Ali or Marciano would've ever beaten him. More so than anybody before or after him.. Dempsey was the product of the times... the roaring 20's for God's sake. Reading some of the stuff in papers about him was like reading poetry and I'm sure you might come away thinking he could also fly and shoot fire from his ass. Anyways, my grandfather was convinced he was the best.... but guess what... my grandfather was blind and never saw him fight. That is how much the media hyped up Dempsey at the time and even after. Was there some substance there.. sure there was.. no doubt he had some special qualities. But there was also a lot missing that was noticed by many people not in the know. The disemination of information was quite different and you had to rely a lot on what other people said and thought.. a scary proposition and it shows with Dempsey imo. Great fighter though just not an all time great top 10 for me

I think we would have to regard Dempsey as being greater, even if you think that Tunney would always have beaten him.

Dempsey like DelaHoya got overated because they were both huge Superstars. They were great for boxing on one level. Jack Dempsey brought attention to boxing and did a great service for the sport. He also brought big $$$

Dempsey was an exciting, spectacular performer. His style was fan friendly. We as fans tend to overate Sluggers/KO Artists. Especially one that climb back into the ring to KO their foe. People remember them more fondly.

Nostalgia aside...his reign was a disappointment. Not active, didn`t fight the best contender available. He did have some good wins pre title when he was on the way up.

Jack Dempsey was a great fighter IMO but when compared to Louis {who raised the bar so high} later and Ali I don`t think he comes close in pure boxing terms.
