British boxing writer Reg Gutteridge said back in 1975..."Dempsey was once the most powerful,...ruthless...and dangerous unarmed man in the world!!!" Quite the compliment!!!
Dempsey was known for going full engines against everyone, sparring, exhibition matches or even explaining boxing techniques.
In Dempsey's defence, it sounds like Wray was out to make a name for himself. He might have taken liberties, and got spanked.
It wasn't a sparring match, it was a fight challenge. The guy drove across the country to knock out "The Heavyweight Champion." Perhaps he thought he could use his size as a shortcut to fame and glory. The funny part is the manager becoming scared after seeing the two square off in the ring lol. Can you imagine?
Sparring , play fight, exhibition or whatever, dempsey was a absolute beast in the ring. Facing him head on, when the mist decends, what a frightful prospect. Like taking on bear defending its cubs!!
I have seen it referred to as a sparring match, but you may be correct, either way the result stands!
I read somewhere that Ernest Hemingway, who was a total *****, wanted to spar with Dempsey as he fancied himself to be a bona fide boxer. Dempsey declined, saying he knew Hemingway would come at him macho style and he (Jack) would have to kill him to stop him. I've seen photos of Dempsey "sparring" with entertainers like Al Jolson and apparently he could play with those kinds of people in a joking way. http://media.gettyimages.com/photos...the-celebrated-black-face-picture-id514977916
