Short bit of film with audio of Jack Dempsey responding to the question of who he thinks are the greatest fighters - up to that point in history of course...

Any comments on the the guy at the forefront of Dempsey's thinking when asked the question (Jim Jeffries) said with almost an obviousness about like everyone knew that he was clearly the number one - thoughts on this?
Is Jeffries kind of under rated these days?

Rocky, interesting question you pose...When i was a youngster reading the old boxing mags, Jim Jeffries name along with Jack Johnson would usually
come up as the greatest heavyweight champion.
Maybe for a good reason. I have always felt, that as years and decades go by, the true essence of a fighter's real place in history is truly less known .
Of course the opposite can apply and sentimental feelings of our youth, can lavish excessive praises of long gone fighters . Who truly knows .?:hi:

Time also allows perspective. In this case many have realized that a modern sized heavy who claimed old, tattered light heavies as his greatest victims is just not that impressive. A classic case of being overhyped in his own day.

I am sure that no heavyweight champion has ever built up a greater aura of invincibility, during their career, than Jeffries.

Whether he was realy that good, or merely under rated, is a different question.

Whichever of the two views you take, Jeffries is almost certainly under rated by people on this forum.

But not by you, or Shitnose, or derpstock. Or Boilermaker, or Morlocks, or Unforgiven, or natonic, or CMOYLE, or greguland, or thistle1, or bummy, or Duodenum, or Mendoza, or a slew of other posters who believe the Exclusively White North American Heavyweight Title was worth more than any of our alphabet titles today

So invincible that he was terrified of losing his title to Jack Johnson and was outboxed for the majority of his fights with past it versions of Corbett and Fitz

Boxing is based on hype and mythology, Jeffries was hyped and most historians didn't have access to allot of the info we have today

That is quite an impresive list you have posted there.

I am actualy quite flattered that my name is on it.

I als have to disagree with your premise. When Jeffries won the title, the best black heavyweight on the planet was George Byers, who lost to the welterweight contender Tommy West.

I think it is fair to say that Jeffries, Fits, and Corbett were the best guys out there. Things only became complicated later in Jeffries title reign, when strong black contenders like Denver Ed Martin started to emerge.

There is no such thing as a reverse biggot.

    There are only biggots.

I can certainly understand why fighters who drew the colour bar, anger and offend many.

The point is that everybody involved is dead, and we are trying to peice together history.

I don't aprove of everything that King Henry VIII did, but I would still atempt an objective assesment of his strengths and weaknesses as a monarch!

Why don't you claim Jeffries is the GOAT then? You only use "experts opinions" when it suits you.
