    Could be.

Having the chance to sit with Bert Sugar (RIP) at Rocky Graziano's pub gave us fans some nice history.
As a kid he stated, the promoter for the fight that Jack Johnson won the HW title was by Tex Rickard.
Because so many black people got beaten and a few murdered when he won, Tex swore he would never stage a fight like that again..at least in America.
    Point? He was Jack's promoter.

Check out another dude name Jack Kearn...he played the same role--not to keep blacks from the title, but fearing what his people would do, if another won. Remember as Jack went to KO, the POLICE of all people stopped the tape.

Bert said One last effort was made to get a fight considering Sam Langford and even some mention of Joe Jeanette. He wanted a specific referee ----who turned it down...Funny that his name is mentioned a lot in the wild west & great movie Tombstone.. Yup....Wyatt Earp LOL! He refereed a few matches...hoping his name would calm the people if a black man got the title again.
Now I don't know what Dempsey would've done, if a fight were to have been made as U stated..he did speak on it... but history (boxing) history and Bert Sugar seems to claim the same madness we get today (promoters preventing fights) But if true, I understand Tex's reason.
