Does that mean he is, and all other opinions be dismissed as they aren't 'experts'?

Since if the experts of the game picked Dempsey as he greatest, he must know what he's talking about.

I read a quote where Dempsey said ,if Max had dedicated himself he would have been one of the greats, I think that's plausible, greatest ever , no way.

I think what Dempsey was saying, was more that he was one of the greatest talents of all time.

    That much is fair enough.

Well Baer was a big heavyweight for his era and he could punch. He had height, range and he wasnt an oaf. He was coordinated. He just didnt have the dedication to fight. He wanted play.

Its clear he couldve been better. He shouldnt have lost his title to Jim Braddock.

He clearly says "Max Baer proved himself one of the greatest if not THE greatest of all time"

It's in the video. I know you prefer to read things, but visual/audible evidence is also worth taking into consideration.

    They were friends.

Dempsey did pick Braddock to beat Louis though. He managed to pick Louis to beat Schmeling in Schmeling-Louis II...but he ruined it a bit by also picking Max

This is the point. Just because someone says a fighter was the best ever doesn't mean they are. Emotions are always going to come in to it. Basing a ranking of a fighter purely on the trust of other people's opinions in nonsense, and fighters should always be judged on merit.

Not directed at you McGrain, you know that.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of he said she said but I think it has to play a part. Byrd's testimony on what it's like to fight the respective Klitschko bros is intersting for example, gold in fact. But you wouldn't base your relative ranking on his word.

It has a part to play, aye. More along lines of separating closely ranked fighters with similar wins/achievements or what ever.

It should not be the basis of your ranking, it's really strange criteria.

Max had the potential to be one of the greats no doubt about it. He was bigger that 99% of the top fighters in the heavyweight division, stronger, harder punching, more durable he also had great stamina, wasn't prone to cutting, good speed and an unorthodox style. Things in life just made him shun the fight game more and more like the Campbell death, going to Hollywood/pursuing acting etc.

https://diva.sfsu.edu/collections/sfbatv/bundles/189348 here's a great doco of Maxie shows how fun he was

Baer had a lethal right hand and an Iron Chin. He was just more interested in being a Playboy than a Fighter after he won the Championship. He was a great guy with charisma. I saw an excerpt from a book about Hollywood during Baer's prime and it listed him as having slept with just about every top Hollywood Starlet at the time and said he got more women than any Actor of the time.:rofl

He qualifies it by saying "on that night", with refference to the Schmeling fight. That suggests that he is talking about it more in a head to head or natural talent context.
