He was an extremely fit man in his prime. 44 is slow though, even for a top athlete.

I'm not sure why some people question his stamina. The Gibbons fight shows him fighting at a furious pace and up on his toes chasing his opponent, getting stronger throughout 15 rounds. In the midday sun.

Some long distance marathon runners have slow healthy resting pulses of 40-44.
Like putting on less mileage on a car. Less wear and tear. I wonder what Harry Greb's was ?

Slow heartbeat Dempsey had at 44 BPM ? So what?
Mal Function ,former welterweight of the 1940s,in 1943, had a resting heart-beat under
20 ... Problem was, he died in 1923...

sure it was something mad like 30something BPM - which is pretty much like one of those tour de france cyclists - which accounted for his insane non stop high pace from the first bell to the last.

American Cross Country Skier Billy Koch had a resting pulse rate of 38 BPM. He was an animal, a human freak.

I remember reading of a cyclist having a resting heart rate of 2 beats a minute
