A fight I'd pay a lot of money to see! Im of the op that Dempsey just hits to hard for Quarry but Jack doesn't find this fight at all easy. Quarry, as usual gutsy but I don't see him getting past the 7 th. That's my take, what's yours? 15 rounds and 1920 s rules.
quarry all day. I am basing this purely on strength of opposition, and on the basis that Quarry stood toe toe with Joe Frazier in a highly competitive bout, and also that he KOd Ernie shavers in the first round. if he could handle Fraziers (at least in first fight) and Shavers power, I dont think he would sweat dempsey. also, despite him losing to guys like Frazier and Clay, they were better than anyone Dempsey fough . and I'm sure Quarry gained enough experience in those fights to take it to the Dempster
It would start out similar to Frazier Quarry but much faster paced which means Quarry is very lucky to see the 3rd
The Jerry Quarry of the WBA Tournament beats Jack Dempsey. Jerry was a fantastic combination puncher, especially to the body. He did a number on Thad Spencer in that tournament, stopping Thad in round 12 on Feb 3 1968. Against Jack, he may suffer some lacerations over the eyes but his pressure would be too much for Dempsey, Jerry by KO 12. Jerry learned a big lesson in losing on points to a veteran like Eddie Machen on July 14 1966.
Think it would play out similar to Patterson v Quarry but w Dempsey edging him out. Maybe even stopping him.
For once, Quarry wouldn't be giving away height and weight to a top level opponent. He and Jack were more or less identical dimension wise. Forget the Frazier fights. I'll never know what came over Jerry in those, trying to out slug the supreme slugger. Quarry was really a brilliant counter puncher who hit with immense power and accuracy. Watch him against Mac Foster, Thad Spencer and Ron Lyle. Crafty and ruthless. All we have on Dempsey is old, flickering films of indeterminate speed. Even those reveal quick feet and hands and terrific power but very little tactical nouse. Tommy Gibbons and, of course, Gene Tunney showed how Jack struggled against a Fighter with a gameplan. I don't think Dempsey could have resisted the impulse to come after Quarry, leading to a counter puncher is what every coach warns a Fighter against and bear in mind, Jerry hit way harder that Gibbons or Tunney. I see Dempsey on the wrong end of a painful and bloody points decision in this one.
Maybe Struggle to knock Gibbons out, but I do not think Dempsey struggle with Gibbons. I scored it pretty one sided in favor of Dempsey. Dempsey had way to much workrate and punch output for the clinching Gibbons imo. Tunney yeah he boxed Dempsey's ears off, but Gibbons?
I would describe Brennan as a counterpuncher, with good power. You might of course point to the fact, that he generally lost to the best contenders.
