I like Dempsey .. too fast, too hard hitting, just as tough if not tougher .. better conditioned .. similar to the Frazier fights but may end sooner ..

Similar to Frazier except Frazier actually beat very good and great heavyweights.

Joe Frazier took punches from Quarry that would have sent Dempsey reeling to the canvas.

Baseless claim. Dempsey was only floored by three fighters. 1 which was very likely a fix, one post-prime, and once in his very last fight.

Horrible horrible fight for Quarry. I'd actually favor Quarry over Marciano (albeit barely) seeing as Marciano's lack of speed, swings from left field, and overall crude style would play right into Quarry's counter-boxing hands. Dempsey is a different animal. To fast, to aggressive. To much

He never faced anyone on Quarry's level. Maybe Tunney but Gene didn't have that much firepower. Jerry actually beat guys that could fight.
Jack Dempsey's career was alot of fun, excitement and he was important to boxing. His style helped move the game forward and made it more popular. $million dollars gates all that was great for the sport.
Much of his career is myth. He didn't beat anyone and dodged his #1 contender. Kearns managed him masterfully. Not just Quarry but the speedy guys that were around by the late 60s into the 70s would of had a field day with Jack.

Great match-up. 50-50 fight. I picked Quarry because I feel he was more proven & fought much better opposition. Dempsey is always dangerous throughout the fight & I wouldn't be surprised if he stopped Quarry, but Quary was known to pull of upsets. He was the underdog against Shavers, Foster & Lyle - who were all big punchers I might add. Dempsey is a big threat, but Quarry wouldn't have seen anything he hadn't seen already with Dempsey.

Dempsey would cut and slash Quarry's face to a mess.

I think if Quarry made it past the 3rd round he’d take the fight

and Quarry could not decisively beat an old Patterson, a blown up middleweight in Ellis or Chuvalo among others .. it's often said he dominated an era and if not for Ali and Frazier ... I don't buy it ... I respect the man, know he was tough , could fight and had brass balls but he excelled against big , slow guys, got hit a lot and was rarely in top condition .. I believe Dempsey underachieved in his career but also believe he was the real goods and an all time great cruiserweight .. he was faster than Quarry, hit harder than Quarry w either hand, was better defensively, better conditioned, just as tough, took as good a shot but was just better ... ghat said a very interesting fight ...

I buy most of what you are saying except... That 32 year "old" Patterson was arguably better than earlier versions of Patterson. He looks better on film. And a very young Jerry nipped him. Jerry had very nifty skills and decent pop, more effective pop than pretty much anyone Dempsey faced. I don't count highly for unskilled swing for the fences types. I used to bristle at Jerry being overrated but on film when he is good, he is very good. And the latter part of this career he was more often undertrained and undermotivated.

I do believe Dempsey was the real goods. But I also think, like his wife noted, he was a 4 round fighter primarily. And he wasn't a defensive genius in the sense he regularly lost focus, got untracked or over anxious and got tagged. That bobbing is cute in clips but watch the full fights.

Have you seen Marcianos resume? Lot of better counter pinchers then Quarry. Not sure the quarry prediction holds water. Although I agree with you on Dempsey.

I don't see the 32 year old Patterson as better than his own prime. He wasn't faster or more explosive .. he just didn't have D'Amato and all his baggage prohibiting him from fighting .. I've watched every version of every Dempsey fight I have been able to see time and time again .. I feel the last two fights against his two best opponents show just how much he had even as a fighter past his best with reduced speed, reflexes and semi-shot legs .. I think Dempsey underachieved in his career with inactivity post 1919 and avoiding Wills and because of this despite of the fact I feel he may have been more naturally talented than Louis, Frazier or Marciano I can't definitively select him over any of them but while I do respect Quarry I feel Dempsey was a step above ..

I don't know I go back and forth with Marciano and Quarry. On one hand I believe Quarry has the style to give Marciano hell. On the other, Marciano fought at a pace Quarry proved he can't deal with (against Frazier) I think you've convinced me (for the time being at least) that Marciano would likely prevail against Quarry though not without trouble (don't see Marciano hitting the deck however).
