Gibbons didn't do squat at heavyweight. We all know what happened to Sharkey in their fight. I don't see Quarry whining to the ref and losing track of the proceeding. And Brennan just wasn't that good, getting battered around by Greb and both a healthy and deathly ill Miske.
Fair enough. I gave both Patterson fights to Patterson who Quarry had a lot more trouble with than he should've given Patterson's age. I agree that Quarry fought in a much tougher era but still disagree that Quarry would come out on top. No harm done either way, still one of my favorite posters.
Ellis was extremely gutsy, cute and had a sneaky, decent right hand ... Joe Frazier destroyed him, showing the jump in class between him and Quarry ... Quarry once again underperformed in losing a dull fight to Ellis ... I've heard all the injury excuses .. this aside the thread is really not about Quarry. His legacy is what it is .. he was a huge step below Ali and Frazier .. he was a super brave, talented fighter who had a nice offensive game, a terrific counter puncher, decent power, a terrific hook, a solid body puncher and a strong chin and needed it because he got hit too much for his talent ... the thread is about Dempsey, if you're a believer or not .. I am enough to say that I believe Dempsey would be too fast and hard hitting with enough game to top Quarry ..
Ellis also beat Bonavena easier than Frazier did. As well as Leotis Martin and Patterson. He won WBA tournament. He was a formidable heavyweight. A green Quarry had two close fights with Floyd Patterson (former champion) A green Dempsey had his ribs broken by John Lester Johnson.
Like I said, this is about how one feels about Dempsey .. I have no interest in debating your elementary comments .. my position remains unchanged.
No, this has nothing to do with feelings. (At least on my end) However you want to frame your concession makes no difference to me. Your not the first nor the last to be blinded by nostalgia. How one feels doesn't change the facts. The truth is unwavering.
