If Joe Louis was to tag Dempsey hard it would sting more than a tad, but a lot of faith must be put into Dempsey's recuperative powers and hustling ways; his head was never up for grabs when combinations where concerned - setting up (for the finish) will prove more than hard. By contrast, Dempsey has much more to work off with a probing target to slip underneath and bang away at the upright posture of Louis. With all of that assertive intensity, a couple of hooks are probably going to stray into Louis' jaw, rolling off sharp dips to cause the first hiccup, and then he is faced with a fighter of similar finishing ability to himself. In reality, this classic, Dempsey pro scenario may become far more scrappy, with the Mauler having to ship all sorts, but, as the bottom line, it's the hustling ways, dynamic movement and cracking punches from Dempsey that make Jack a safer bet.
If Louis gets past the sixth round, then the fight is a forgone conclusion, I'll just leave it at that.
What makes you so sure? i was under the assumption slick boxers with fast feet gave louis problems, not skilled swarmers who came right into him. Dempsey had great head movement and louis jab wont be as effective, but dempsey is going to come in looking to take out louis, and I think Louis has the superior firepower and faster hands. Louis combinations are going to find their mark. I dont believe a fighter in history can go into joe louis and beat him.
Don't know about this one. I want to say Louis but I can't help but see Two Ton Tony Galento in my minds eye putting Joe on the seat of his pants and hurting him as well and Galento had no footwork or head movement. Dempsey on the other hand did and plenty of it. Galento had a left hook and nothing else offensively speaking while Jack was a two fisted banger. If Dempsey can jump on Joe from the opening bell, crowd him and let him have it with both hands then I think he could end it early. If he opts to play it cautious then he's playing into Joe's hands. He can't give Joe the time to set him up with his great jab and powerful combos like Baer did. He's ot to crowd him and take the play away from Joe. One thing's for certain though, this fight does NOT go the distance. I don't give it more than 5 rounds on the outside.
Louis Is In My Top 5 Of Alltime And When A Fighter Is So Awsome He Could Always Win 1 Out Of 3 Against An Equal Opp. But I See Dempsey, Not Letting Louis Out Of The 3rd Round Awake.louis Was A Slightly Slower Starter With Slower Footwork, wich Would Be Hazerdous Against The Mauler In His Real Prime Say Abbout 25 Yrs Old
I'd put Dempsey to take it in the early rounds. Louis was a finisher though and I think he'd be able take it past round 5.
Louis might be a slightly slower starter compared to Dempsey, but he was still a tremendously fast starter. He has a ton of first round KO's, anyone who has seen the Schmeling rematch won't dare drop the words "slow starter". And contrary to Dempsey, who went all-out early, he retained his power untill the final bell.
Dempsey must have been really susceptible to fast air currents caused by punches then, because somehow he got bruised, puffed and knocked down by all the times Tunney missed the mark.
Great fight. Dempsey is ferocious and in my top 8 of all time, but coming in to Louis spells trouble. Dempsey had very good defense however and his variety of punches would certainly trouble Louis. I could easily see Dempsey dropping him and maybe even getting a KO, but more often than not Louis is able to break him down and win by KO.
Dempseys eyes were allmost swollen shut at the end of the fights what has that to do with the accessability of his chin? " I realized that Dempsey ,by constant conscious effort in his training bouts, shadow boxing and road work, had learned to keep his chin on his chest. This constant precautionary measure developed an instinctive habit of keeping his tucked down when in action. In the 20 rds I have boxed Dempsey I never once landed a hardpunch on his chin." Gene Tunney.
Louis via TKO in 6 under 1940s+ rules. Dempsey only comes into his own here if there's no neutral corner rule, I think.
Yes agreed I Would go with Louis here by mid round KO but Dempsey would definately have a chance for sure.
