I'm not comparing them as there is no comparison.

I’m honestly convinced this guy hasn’t watched Dempsey a day in his life.

I agree, but because their styles are so different.

I would favor Dempsey. His style is all wrong for Joe. Louis had great success with fighters who stood in front of him or weren’t very good on their feet. Conn almost took a decision from him, and Dempsey was every bit as quick and maneuverable as Conn, and he hit much harder. A better all around fighter than Schmeling and Rocky. Not an easy fight for Dempsey, but I think Joe is there to hit, and hit often.

    No, Dempsey wasn’t crude.

Among other executions, nothing crude about the so called Dempsey roll - nor the punch that it set up - near perfect left hook landed on Willard - very fluid and mod. looking.

Also see Dempsey’s work and executions in rounds 2 and 3 - very, very good.

Jack was a swarmer. Louis a puncher boxer.

Perhaps just based on styles, Louis would appear and actually be, as per the requirements of his style, that much more refined…comparatively.

Dempsey could definitely rock Joe’s boat early but after 2-3 rounds Joe would’ve settled in and have begun incrementally dishing out that much more than he was taking - KO/TKO by rounds 6-8.

I would make Louis a very heavy favorite, affording Dempsey a puncher’s chance

Dempsey was a puncher/swarmer, unlike full swarmers (Marciano, Frazier) Dempsey did not often wear down his opponents, rather relying on his accurate hard punches mixed with swarmer traits of defensive head/body movements and footwork to end fights earlier, comparable to Tyson, another puncher/swarmer

Yeah, a puncher/swarmer is a fair categorisation. I think there are enough fights to uphold Dempsey as being somewhat equal in both departments.

Even in KOs effected by say the 5th or 6th round, Dempsey had already well invested in an accumulative effect - but he also had the single shot power to take instant advantage of the weakened fighter before him.

He didn’t always have to continue at the same wear down rate - he could up the ante as and when appropriate.

I used to favor Louis in this one, but after reassessing his career and the caliber of punchers who put him down 10 times, and seeing the struggles he had with Godoy, I'm going to tentatively change my pick to Dempsey.

I doubt Dempsey would try to survive in a way Godoy did. Remember, Godoy didn't really try to knock out Louis, he was there to survive.

Then why did Louis stop all of the swarmers he faced in his prime in brutal fashion, with the exception of Godoy who did everything to survive?
