Pick either version of either. The version of Jack that faced Willard, the one upon which you Classicists most ruminate in the shower, weighed a whopping 180, so he essentially was a light heavy. In this match-up, Jack finally has to face an athletic fighter with speed, real skill and a big punch. In a game of discipline over 15 rounds, who takes this?
I liked Spinks's unique style but I reckon he was just too slow on his feet to make it work against a prime Dempsey. He might have some flashes of success but Dempsey would get to him and stop him inside 5 or 6 rounds I think. Dempsey had devastating power.
I think that Dempsey takes this by a knockout. I understand the point that Seamus makes about JD's weight in the Willard fight and that Spinks would not be giving up much in terms of natural size, but I was underwhelmed by Spinks at HW and Dempsey was freakish for a man his size in terms of speed and power. I like Unforgiven's assessment of the outcome here.
Wow, people are writing off Spinks quickly here. I also think Dempsey wins, but it's not as easy as people think. Spinks wasn't a plodder like Willard, and I think Jack may have found it a bit harder to land on Spinks than on Jess. In my opinion Spinks had beaten himself in the Tyson match. It's been a long time since I saw it, but I seem to recall Spinks seemed petrified.
Heavyweight Spinks of 85-87 beats the version of Dempsey who fought Tunney and Sharkey but gets KO'd by the monster who fought Willard.
I agree though I think it goes 3/4 rds, too much all out aggression power and too quick into range for the herky jerky Spinks.
If you read Tommy Gibbonss account of the Dempsey fight, it is quite interesting. He claimed that Dempsey almost had him out in the early rounds, and that he had to leave his head open, to get Dempsey away from his body. Sometimes the line between Spinks Tyson and Dempsey Gibbons is a fine one.
Gibbons also stated that Dempsey didn't hit as hard as Miske and that Dempsey fouled him black and blue about the groin region. I am not discounting Jack's chance. He had the guns and tenacity to finish anyone. However, Spinks was a clever fellow, as big as Dempsey and had a thunderous right himself.
