Both Dempsey and Ali were glorified carnival act fighters. They get rated highly because they were 'showbiz' fighters, made a lot of noise, caught a lot of copy, sold a lot of tickets. Their 'greatness' is nothing but smoke and mirrors. There probably ten or twenty boxers active at the peak of each of their careers who could have bested them in a straight fight.
If you think Dempsey and Ali are just ''showbiz fighters and they're not great just just an illusion ''smoke and mirrors'' that's just about one of the dumbest things i've heard
No, it would be under-rating them to put them below Bruce Lee. Both of them came before Bruce Lee - and were actually great influences on him.
That's because they're much bigger men. P4P Marciano has a much better case for being called a harder puncher. Shavers has a very poor case if you actually break down his results in the ring.
Here's just my two cents... I pick Ali simply because he has good footwork and movement. Dempsey had trouble with movers. Tunney showed that. Dempsey's power is not that much of a factor as Ali took harder punches from bigger men from his era. Dempsey has a cast iron chin, so Ali on points.
Well I think any version bar 77-80 of Ali could put away Dempsey. However I think Dempsey is in with a chance against the older Ali who relied more on his chin and ability to take a punch than the lightening fast Cassius Clay. Cassius Clay would run rings around Dempsey but the older version of Ali has a much tougher time although I would probably still pick him, espeically the version that fought Foreman in 74 and Frazier in 75.
Dempsey was kayoed in the first by Fireman Jim Flynn, though apparently it was controversial. What were the circumstances surrounding that fight, anyone know?
How many times do i have to say this Dempsey was 3 years laid off, If Dempsey stayed on he wouldnt of just followed Tunney around meaninglessly he would of attacked he obviously wasnt what he used to be.
many people thought that maybe dempsey took a dive, but it was always denied by dempsey. The idea was he had no money and basically wasnt eating up until the fight. That may have meant that he did take the dive, or maybe he was so weak that he did get legit ko'ed...but in that case, it wouldnt be so legit of a ko (if you get my meaning)
