Semi older Arcel liked Louis as the greatest (or atleast as great as any) champion, but said Dempsey was as great as one could rightly ask a fighter to be. HBO video Arcel talked about Dempsey picnic'ing on the current heavyweight crop, though this was between Holmes's hayday and the rise of Tyson. I've seen somewhere (c. Tyson's prime) a Arcel citation that he thought Tyson-Dempsey would be a tremendous encounter. As he aged further, Arcel became more pro-Dempsey, admitting (of Dempsey's successors) that Louis and Ali would have had a chance with prime Jack. Some say there are later taped interviews with Arcel where he has prime Dempsey murdering everyone.
I generally rate Jack Dempsey higher than most do, but Muhammad Ali would have beaten Jack by decision in my book. I doubt if Jack would have hit Muhammad with anything significant.
Imagine comparing Ali to Tunney, That’s like comparing me to a bird because we are bipedal- they fought nothing alike.
I can't blame Dempsey for losing by unanimous decision. Muhammad Ali would show him a "dance" that Dempsey had never seen in his boxing days. Dempsey would wonder: "What is this; is this boxing (I didn't notice Jess Willard dancing like this)?".
Ali in his prime dances away 10/10 times. The Ali post layoff would be a different story, in favor of Dempsey, a two handed harder hitting Frazier.
Where is the evdence Dempsey hit harder than Frazier? Dempsey himself said that he generally took a while pounding on guys to get them out of there, that ROcky hit harder. Triangulate & it is about equal. And Frazier is maligned as a one handed fighter, his right though not as powerful was pretty active. Without that he & Ali would never have set a HW punch stat record in the killing heat of Manilla.
