A bit like Ali's match with Jerry Quarry, though slightly more competitive. Ali is bigger, faster, stronger, is more coordinated, and is best against punchers. This would not be close.
Here is a hard idea to get your heads around. What if Jack Dempsey drew the colour bar, dodged the draft, made a living defiling virgins, and kicked a small dog, but unfortunately happened to be the best heavyweight of all time head to head? Would a lot of people on this forum be prepared to go there?
Even with a lengthy layoff, he must have dropped off an awful lot to lose to Gene Tunney who, while a brilliant fighter, was an ex-middleweight. I understand where you're coming from -- how the misjudgement of an era over-or-undervalues an entire generation of fighters, and how subpar recording technology makes this all the more likely -- but the resume and accomplishments of Jack Dempsey for me support the consensus here. While what you say is possible, it is so unlikely to me as to be completely discounted.
So, basically...what if Ali had done all of those things? I think people would still recognize him as the best heavyweight ever. I mean, people would be pretty upset about the dog thing, but it wouldn't detract from his status as the best heavyweight ever. Muhammad Ali, that is. The best heavyweight ever.
Sure. He is just two teirs above the fighters who routinely took Ali to the brink of disaster. This all took place in the real world!
Dempsey couldn't box his way out of a paper bag. He's nowhere near the best of all time head to head, not even close.
Smaller quick hwts gave Ali the most trouble. In Dempsey he would be facing possibly the quickest and one of the hardest punchers Ali ever faced. Add to this Dempseys all time ability, toughness and chin and you have one formable opponent. It would be a close hard fought fight with Dempsey weaving in close and pounding Ali to the body. Unlike Frazier Dempsey had two great fists to use one just as effective as the other. Ali would do well at distance. Prediction here is Dempsey starts strong dropping Ali early and is ahead after 8-10 rounds. Alis great endurance and chin holds him in good stead as he sweeps the last 3 rounds to take the decision.
Wow okay Dempsey was a lot better than Quarry or Patterson or any of these other guys your trying to compare him to, harder left hook than Cooper i believe because Dempsys was quicker and was an amazing combination puncher, if you want to compare him to somebody Ali fought there's not really, if it had to be one though it would probably be like a 6'1 Joe Frazier with better boxing ability and a much much quicker left hook and handspeed, better combinations as well, he was fast faster than in the Willard fight it was slowed down cause of a hand crank camera and the Willard fight wasn't his usual self he was a better boxer than in that fight, in that fight he just turned brawler cause he was extremley nervous, Alis habit of dropping his right hand and getting hit with left hooks would be bad for him in this fight, And FUUUUUUUUCK Dempsey was 3 years laid off when he fought Tunney living the fast life in the mid 20's being in movies and drinking and womanizing it's equivelant to Ali's 3 year layoff and then losing to Frazier that's what happened with the Dempsy and Tunney fight and then Dempsey came back knock Tunney down in the rematch and the long count ect ect you know the story, I still believe Ali would win this but i dont think people should comment on this unless they know alot about Dempsey not thinking oh i saw a round of him vs Tunney or i've heard a bit about him or saw the Willard fight ect, and i really dont believe Ali by stoppage if this is a prime Dempsey motivated fighting for food and life like he had to since he was 16 and was hungry he would not go out unless he was out dead cold on a stretcher and Ali did not have the power to do that i dont care how hard he catches him coming in he'd have to have power like George Foreman and then catch him coming in with a quick shot to do something like that to Dempsey he had a great chin In his prime he had 6 1st round KO's in a row and in one year had 18 first round knockouts if i remember correctly...
I don't understand why it's so hard to swallow that Ali would have beaten Dempsey, losing to the GOAT at a weight division that in reality is above yours is nothing to be ashamed about. I'd favour Dempsey over damn near 99% of cruiserweights who have come and gone and a large string of good and great heavyweights. What more do you want?
