Jack Dempsey V s Earnie Shavers.?

I think Shavers rates a bit more of a a chance than is being afforded.

Crude Firpo put the incoming Dempsey down with a right hand seconds after opening bell. Sharks had Dempsey make like a rag doll when he punched him across the ring in the opening stanza. Carpentier rocked him…..etc.

Also, v Firpo, Dempsey might not have made it back into the ring in time without assistance - so that could’ve been a KO otherwise.

The Tunney bouts were just 10 rds - increased chance Demps doesn’t see those out if they were 15 rd’rs or possibly also some of his fights that were just 4 rd’rs.

Of course these events occurred at different points in Demps career - with arguable rust due to inactivity and substantive erosions otherwise.

Anyway, not to say Earnie has a chin like Ali but a more common/pronounced signature to his KO/stoppage losses was his gassing.

IF Earnie is supposed to be the puncher many suggest he was (methinks he’s slightly overrated and yes, I’ve read all the testimonials) then just one flush connection should not be just a LOT harder but, instead, it should light years beyond any punch Demps ever stood up to in his his time - and Ernie has a fair chance of landing same. In explaining why Earnie didn’t secure KOs in fights in which one might’ve thought he would have - I see Earnie’s skills are often underrated - specifically in regards to his ability to land defining punches and follow up sufficiently for the KO - imo, in that very dept., Earnie was somewhat better than he is afforded.

IMO, 50/50 pick ‘em over first 4 rds, Based on his more often than not history, The Acorns chances dive exponentially thereafter due to a fast depleting tank - though if we extract Earnie’s perhaps best demonstrated stamina from just one fight. - his conditioning, metering and pace v Ali was very good.

 

Flynn wasn't that type of fireman.

Though I imagine knowing how to put them out would be useful to him

 

If Dempsey's fights an idiotic fight, and charges in with no defence like he did against Firpo, there's a very good chance he gets knocked out.

But that wasn't the Dempsey that fought Willard. Dempsey took risks, so Shavers has some chance, but I'd heavily favour Dempsey.

 

I would wager a substantial sum on Shavers by a knockout.

 

The Flynn loss on Dempsey was most likely a dive. This has been well documented and hardly make s a case for Shavers getting a ko over Dempsey. Shavers never beat anyone remotely close to Dempseyś league, and he would be outclassed and kod in 3 rounds or less.

 

The old rules both help and hurt Shavers.

As a limited slugger with limited stamina, it certainly gives him an opportunity to blast out guys early that he may otherwise lose to. Without a neutral corner rule he can take risks swinging for the fences and not worrying about saving energy.

The flip side to this is that if someone doesn't get KOd and has the power to hurt Shavers, then Shavers finds himself in the opposite predicament. If you look at several of Shavers stoppage losses, he is clueless when it comes to basic defense and survival skills. All he does is cover up and hide in a shell like fashion until he gets the chance to punch back. He rarely initiated clinches and lacked head movement or footwork to get away. This could be a death sentence against someone like Dempsey who could take a punch and give one right back. Dempsey was also one of the most merciless finishers and would be all over shavers like a fat suburban wife all over the buffet table.

I'd favor Dempsey more often than not at least 70% of the time. His hand speed, combinations, and gritty determination would make up for any differenced in raw power.
