The best version of Douglas vs a prime 1919 Dempsey. Will Douglas size and boxing skill be too much??

Douglas caught lightning in a bottle for one night....Tyson wanted to be Dempsey...he wasn't...1919 Dempsey kicks his behind...

Dempsey never fought anything resembling a big modern heavyweight with skills like douglas. Different stratosphere in terms of size and different stratosphere in skill and ability not just with dempsey but with any fighter back then black or white. Not a race thing. Mpre like an advancement in skills overall probably due to boxing being televised. Joe louis is the first heavyweight champ who had a modern style and who i personally(as insignificant as my opinion may be) rate h2h against heavies from the 60s and on.

Dempsey has never seen a snapping jab like douglas', combinations from a man of douglas size, footwork and handspeed from a guy as big as douglas.

EDIT: just rewatched dempsey vs willard. Willard doesnt even know to raise his hands and cover up after he got knocked down and hurt, he actually still had his hands down while dempsey was beating on him. Mind boggling.

Put Willard in his prime in a time machine and transport him to kronk gym and Emanuel steward would think it was his first time in a boxing gym.

I like Dempsey. Douglas was able to disrupt Tyson's timing with his jab but more importantly with his lead right which to me was the Key to his victory.. Anyway, I see prime Dempsey and his footwork getting in and blasting out Buster in 4

This is a massive assumption on your part.

It's an extremely hard fight for Jack I will say. Busters a big guy with a snapping jab, and he had decent power. Would take a lot of the best of jack to win and we know Dempsey can hit. Not an easy fight to call for me.

I actually agree that Dempsey never fought a skilled big man on film.

Perhaps if there was footage of Fulton, we could have a better understanding of this. However, neither Willard nor Fripo were skilled on film.

Dempsey clearly had the exceptional speed and power required to ko bigger guys. However, if he were fighting in later era's, he might have had to adjust to more skilled big men. Could he have made the adjustment? I think he likely would have but point remains that there isn't any evidence that he fought a particularly skilled big guy on film.

Dempsey is going to have a lot of trouble with someone like Douglas.

This time the difference in time periods matters for obvious reasons .

Its a 50-50 match up for me.

Dempsey would have to look out for the big uppercut that Buster throws. However, Jack had longer arms than Tyson and perhaps his reach could allow him to connect where Mike couldn't.

Dempsey was arguably better at fighting when behind than Tyson. Tyson could get overtly frustrated at times.

    Close.
