Best one round of slugging we'd ever see.

Dempsey W KO1. Don't see a two-way brawl either, Shavers had neither the speed or the chin to engage one of the most intense, perpetually attacking heavyweight fighters of all-time.

Yeah bad stylistic matchup for Earnie. But if he manages to land one of those big overhand rights on Dempsey's 188 lbs chin, it could be a problem.

Earnie went 15 with Ali and 12 with Holmes. Meanwhile, Jack was rocked to his heels by Carpentier.

I'm going with Earnie within 3. Bad match-up for Jack's sloppy defense.

That's entirely true, but you can't exactly ignore what happened to Shavers against Quarry either.. Kinda throws a fly in the ointment.

Or the fact that every elite puncher Shavers fought stopped him. In fact, Shavers hardly had a win against a guy who was ranked in the world top 10 at the time.

    Also true.

I don't know if he ever beat a puncher at all. Well Jeff Simms but that guy was nobody.

Ali and Holmes fought nothing like Dempsey.
And Shavers fought nothing like Carpentier.

You are picking Shavers based on the fact that he lasted the distance with Ali and Holmes?

I really don't see any sensible thread of logic here.

And you can't ignore what happened to Dempsey against Flynn...

Even that version Ali could dish out damage over 15 rounds, and certainly the version of Holmes that he fought could. Shavers bore it out as a more mature fighter. He wasn't completely without durability. The first punch Dempsey throws doesn't knock him into next week. That's getting a little exaggerated.

Why would it be relevant that he lasted the distance against two guys who were not top end power punchers?

You mean Dempsey might need a few good punches to knock him into next week?

I think they hit plenty hard... especially Holmes when comparing himto a 180 pounder... also, both had 15 rounds of hitting The Acorn. He absorbed plenty of shots in that time.

I am not saying Shavers was the most durable fellow but his fragility is being overplayed.

By the way, I don't think Dempsey lasts 15 with Holmes.

2 guys with leaky defences and vulnerable chins. If Shavers lands that overhand right it's lights out. If Dempsey gets inside and starts teeing off Shavers could be ko'd too.

It's actually a good style match up for Shavers though. He's got a smaller guy rushing him who carries his chin high so it makes it easier for him to find his target.
