He was overconfident going to the Brennan title bout, got hit hard in the first , held his ground, fought a more intelligent fight. Fought smart vs Carpentier. Fought smart vs Gibbons. He was quite capable of working a guy down and not just swing wild.

Dempsey is pretty overrated. He never fought any tough black guys during his peak.

Honestly, I think Earnie would have a field day with him.

It seems according to most of ESB posters that Dempsey, had no defense, really couldn't hit hard, was easy to tag on the button, etc, etc, etc...Well tell that to Gene Tunney about Dempsey being easy to hit flush on the chin. Tunney said that Dempsey with his chin tucked into his chest, his bobbing and weaving style made it almost impossible to hit solid on the chin... And when he was hit Dempsey recovered from a punch quicker than any heavyweight he had seen. I believe fervently the host of great fighters, trainers, sports writers who saw Dempsey at his best fight and raved about his speed, power, toughness and ferocity a helluva a lot more than some naysayers today MAINLY on ESB forum...Sue me...

Imagine what a pathetic powder-puff Harry Wills must have been then.
Firpo took him the full 12, and Harry could only deck him with a blatant punch on the break.

Oh I see Dempsey was, pardon the expression white, whilst Earnie Shavers was black, therefore Dempsey was overrated...If this isn't reverse "racism" at it's best, what is ???
Put an asterisk on all Caucasians, orientals, mexicano's and be done with....What nonsense . Yipes...

Vincent Rondon (who was Ko'd by Bennie Briscoe,Bob Foster and others) went the distance with Earnie Shavers and Tex Cobb, Mercado,Stander, Lyle,Stallings,Quarry,Holmes,Ali survived his bombs and beat him I would have to say JD had the ability to survive a wallop and dish it out pretty nasty as well.

I would put my bet on JD

journeyman often survive the distance with world class punchers, boxers, etc, because because they don't always take chances or fight only to survive. Can you picture Jack Dempsey going into "any" fight where all he does is clinch, run, hold, and minimize his punch output?
