No Dempsey would fight the fight like Stander,Lyle,Quarry,Cobb,Mercado and Stallings and go at it with Earnie but I do think JD was better than all is them, quicker and aggressive and even against Firpo which was a tremendous punch followed by a push through the ropes JD got up and ripped those fists of stone in the wild bull.
Most of the guys you listed were losing to Shavers and outlasted him either because he gassed was outside of prime.. I can see a similar scenario to the Quarry fight where Jack let's loose and overwhelms Earnie before he gets anything off..
I would pick Tunney and Gibbons to beat Shavers. I suspect a healthy Miske wouldn't be much less than even money. Of course, Shavers could behead Miske and might catch up to Gibbons (though that's not my opinion).
I fancy Willard would beat him, to be honest. Even on that form, he might get out of early trouble, and turn it into a fight of attrition. If not, he might just wing a left hook, and separate Shavers from his senses.
I figure Willard a little to easy to hit to the body. Shavers would just explode ribs or breastbone or something awful pretty quick by my eye.
I take it you have no issue with the 'Assault in the ring' incident where Panama Lewis removed the padding from Resto's gloves then? Try taking a punch from a glove and undercovered fist and get back to me. Even if the power/pressure is the same, the impact is sharper and localised which creates more impact damage. If the impact is on the temple/chin it will be more likely to cause concussion as it'll create great impact force. It's more complicated than that, it's not that lack of padded gloves massively increases power but it is a factor. Fighters of the era weren't particularly big punchers so therefore the chins weren't tested as much. Hands were damaged quicker too. Plus none of that detracts from the fact that it took Dempsey about 1000 punches to KO Firpo and Willard. Does that make seriously sense in your head? If someone's damaged their ankle, it's obviously not from 'being hit in their upper body', it's from losing balance and the weight or momentum leading to ankle being twisted or fractured. A year or so before his greatest win and the excuses for Dempsey here are laugable Flynn was at world level, he was an ex title challenger. He managed to stack the deck and not take any risky fights after he was champ ofcourse.
Dempsey has that classical mythical aura about him and would destroy every big foot heavyweight in the history of boxing. He eats all Shavers shots and knocks him into the Van Allen belt.
So it caused a difference or not? Force was the wrong word, but it's the transition of that force to the target that's slower with softer materials compared to harder materials. For instance would you prefer I hit you around the head with a pillow or a piece of metal that weighed the same as the pillow? It's an extreme example but which would be more likely to concuss you? I don't think they hit very hard, hence their chins weren't necessarily better according to that chain of thought. It's that simple. Are you not familiar with hyperbole? Dempsey took countless punches to put away Firpo and Willard. The argument for Shavers power tends to revolve around Ali, Norton and Holmes testimony amongst others. And the fact he concussed people with single punches, a concussion isn't something that always happens in a KO either.
Yes, in myth he does amazing things. His professional record, who he fought and when he fought them, who he did not fight, and how long he did not fight at all are far more prosaic and unimpressive.
So in your hatred of Jack Dempsey you have to distort history saying that Dempsey was so weak a hitter that it took "a 1000 punches to ko Willard and Firpo". PP your B.S. never ceases to amaze me. In the Willard fight Dempsey with any other referee in history would have won by a KO when he dropped Willard SEVEN DAMN times in the very first round. Jess Willard was never dropped once before even lasting 25 rounds against Jack Johnson taking hundreds of shots from Johnson before Jess knocked Lil Arthur out in the 26th round...Against Firpo Dempsey flattened Firpo seven times in the first round before koing Firpo in the second round with a one-two combo so fast and deadly, you can hardly see it in slow motion...So where is the 1000 punches the "weak" hitting Dempsey landed on Willard and Firpo you uttered ??? What would you in your "fairness' and brilliance say about my favorite Puncher Joe Louis who hit a slow ponderous Abe Simon with every deadly combinations for THIRTEEN ROUNDS, before the referee stopped the slaughter with Simon still on his feet, protesting the stoppage ??? What about your idol Ali who threw tons of punches on George Chuvalo for 12 rounds without putting a dent on Chuvalo ? As an impartial boxing historian you should know these things, but single out a man like Jack Dempsey who today cannot defend himself... Remember PP, though you despise Jack Dempsey in your posts every poster has a right to their opinions, but not to false facts that demean a fighter who they hold in contempt...Try a little fairness and read boxing history before you slur a decent man and idol of millions, Jack Dempsey...
