S, tell this stuff to the thousands of fighters, such as Gene Tunney, Sam Langford, Mickey Walker, Jack Sharkey, Max Schmeling, and top trainers and experienced veteran sports writers who proclaimed Jack Dempsey as the best heavyweight they had seen....But you of course know better...These experts took into account who Dempsey fought and who he didn''t fight basing their opinions on WHAT attributes he brought into the RING...cheers.
Interesting thoughts gentleman. Its certainly plausible that Willard could have beaten Earnie as he was the type of long distance endurance fighter who could possibly outlast him. In addition, his size and power could play a factor as well. I guess it depends on which versions of these guys show up. Probably not a fight I'd bet much on either way.
So had Ray Arcel seen most of the above as well as Dempsey before his 3 year layoff, and he STILL insisted that the Manassa Mauler was likely the best ever. So did Max Schmeling rave about Dempsey who Max proclaimed in his autobiography was "in a class by himself", having boxed with Dempsey several times in Berlin before Dempsey took a 3 year layoff in 1923... With respect to you S, I have a hell of more faith in the expertize of a Ray Arcel or Max Schmeling than in you or myself. Not only do I read boxing history avidly, I take heed in what it tells me... history, I take heed of it...
I am taking no man's opinion of someone he saw in the bloom of his youth versus someone he saw in his doddering old age. Sorry, it's human nature to prefer that which rekindles or inflates one's most vital years.
As always with Sharkey, "it depends" but it's definitely fair saying so. For obvious reasons i've gone with the guys Dempsey met who were hard to hit properly.
A bunch of malarkey S. I might be old but I am not "doddering" and it is an insult to people of my generation who served their country, paid their taxes, fought through sickness and adversity and somehow managed to still remain on this side of the graveyard...S, I will match you anytime on knowledge of boxing's glorious past without referring to the record books...Yes what I saw in my youth ringside, you cannot imagine. Great fighters I have seen, because the boxing pool of fighters were so vast, that the very top fighters HAD to be great such as a Ray Robinson, Willie Pep, Ike Williams, Kid Gavilan, Jake LaMotta, Marcel Cerdan, Sandy Saddler, Beau Jack, Henry Armstrong, etc. Yes these old timers were great and I am proud I had seen them in their illustrious prime, though you call me a doddering old fool. some day you will regret these insensitive remarks, but time will tell. One other thing S. I though an oldtimer, rave about an Alexis Arguello, a GGG, a Kovalev, a Mannie Paq, a Mathew Sadd, all modern fighters whom would hold their own with the great fighters of my youth... I try to be objective about boxing whilst you are being vindictive to guys like myself who have made it so long, calling us DODDERING. Shame on you S...Naughty boy...
Burt, you are batting 1000 in completely misunderstanding my posts. I was referring to the expectation that the thoughts and estimations of a 19 year old Arcel versus a 75 year old Arcel would be equally objective.. not those of a Burt Bienstock. I appreciate your input and perspective. However, I give up trying to respond because you can not understand the simplest of posts.
