This thread is partially an excuse to hear how good you guys think Jack is, please explain why you think your choice wins.
I’m not sure I have a choice, off-hand. I am only considering the prime & pre-roided out HW Holyfield, 1989-92. Tough, brutal, exciting, & dirty fight. I’d have to mull it over.
Dempsey likely just didn't have the tools to deal with such an advanced and well rounded fighter like Holyfield, which is no knock against him.
I favor Jack here heavily in the opening rounds after 6 rounds it may swing more towards Evander but I'm not putting money on it.
Somewhat related question here…is there any fight footage available of Dempsey prior to the Willard fight in July 1919?
Jack did about as well as he could have done during his time, against who he and his management chose to fight, with the distractions he had. It's not super revealing how he would do in the modern era. The stuff was there for making a champ. But we know what Holy did in the modern times. And at his best he was a much taller order than anyone Jack ever faced.
The fight would have to be at cruiserweight. Though I’m not so sure Holyfield was fighting clean at that weight either. His career will alway have a cloud of doubt hovering over him. Dempsey had an underrated defense and faster hands and feet. The Dempsey that KO’d Willard fought like a caged tiger. Dempsey was punched with four ounce gloves and could likely take whatever Holyfield threw his way.
I've said this befor about a mythical fight involving Frazier and Holy and for me it applies here also. Holys plan vs Dempsey would probably be to Box early. We know how Holy reacts to getting tagged hard and often and then he fights. Love that about him but Dempsey is the puncher here. Dempsey stops him IMO
